Re: Cattle ships
Something different.
My only experience of cattle aboard ship, was on the Riebeeck Castle. We were transporting pedigree cows. This was to improve the livestock*strain in South Africa. They had there own handlers, and were treated like royalty. Was good to visit them in the stalls.Something*different while at sea.Den.

Doc, #16:
A better kind of cattle ship: The SS Fort Stager delivering pedigree sheep from Melbourne to Durban in 1946. There was an almighty storm through the Australian Bight and the ewes went into labour giving birth to 29 lambs which the crew had to spoon feed, the ship was 5 days late.

Re: Cattle ships
Had many good memories of many meals on Livestock carriers, though don't remember any boiled mutton or beef casseroles. The only bad memories are having to skipper a tug out of Darwin to tow in a cattle ship that had lost both generators and main engine and as we did not have a radar, we homed in on the line of dead cattle, luckily we were down wind and tide.
Another bad experience was a load of buffalo out of Darwin for Malaysia. THey were supposed to be tame, but by the time we got them out of the trucks, all the trailers had to be virtually re built. THe pens on the barge were made of 2" water pipe and by the time they came to discharge, all the pens had been broken down smashed leaving a cargo of bulk buffalo. During discharge, one got away and killed a couple of locals before it was shot dead. Voyage report made interesting reading. Australian buffaloes where made a prohibited import to Malaysia.

Re: Cattle ships
Brain, by the time we got to that meat works in Brisbane they had become a bit more humane.
Cattle into the box and a gun on a long pole used to kill them.
Then as you say inside for the remainder of the treatment.
We stood and watched for a while, I had seen Pigs killed in UK, even done a few myself with hammer and a piece of wood with a nail in it, but it is still not the best of sights.
Then inside we were allowed to buy steak in the little butchers shop there.
Paid about two and six for a steak about the size of half a cow.
Eat very well back on board.
Funny thing is I rarely eat steak now.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Cattle ships
I had posted this somewhere before , possibly the worst job i could ever have taken.
Pig Slaughterer in a Factory in Birmingham.
However besides the off loading of the Pigs from the Trucks (It was pityfull to watch) the remaining proceedure was in my opinion as Humane as it could be /
The Piggies got a Chain around the Hind Legs after being given an Electric Shock to numb the back legs, thus they felt no pain ,then strung upside down on a Conveyor.
Next as they came along there were about 12 of us standing in line with very sharp Knives, and each in turn slit the Throat of the Pig that was next up t you.
That made it bleed profusely and lots f Red matter discharged from each piggy! Where ! On to us of course bleedin 'ORRIBLE!
That Job put me off eating Pork for Years.
Terrible really !
Sorry Piggies and all!
Cheers

Re: Cattle ships
Love the breakfasts in Ireland where you get both the
Black and white puddings, White pudding is broadly
similar to black pudding, but does not include blood.

Re: Cattle ships
Vernon, when my dad had a share in the Pig farm I often went to the yard where they were to be 'seen to'.
But it was humane, not like you lot of 'Rambois'.
They were lead through a water trough, similar to the ones use for Sheep, and an electric shock hit them.
Pigs die very easily so by the time the chain was on the back leg they were totally out of it.
Then the throat cuts came at them, you know the rest.
That was in London at Walls factory, same as the Ice Cream ones, and in the late 50's.
Happy daze John in Oz.
