Default Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day on 3 September

Seafarers UK is making its annual call for flagpole owners to ‘Fly the Red Ensign for Merchant Navy Day’ on 3 September. This year, as flag-hoisting ceremonies and public gatherings are looking unlikely due to local lockdowns and other Covid-19 preventative measures, the charity is simply asking for the UK Merchant Navy’s official ensign to be flown ashore in as many places as possible. Local authorities and councils that got involved last year are already included on the ‘Roll of Honour’ at https://www.seafarers.uk/merchant-na...hant-navy-day/ Others are encouraged to register their participation online, to receive a Commemorative Certificate. Please spread the word to help raise public awareness of our maritime nation’s ongoing dependence on merchant seafarers!

    lesser scale.

    All the best, Keith.

Met a chap earlier, odd here to see a red ensign flying apart from remembrance / commemoration days etc here,
I had to knock on his door and ask more, took a different route to go shopping tonight and could not fail to notice
a red ensign flying above the roof of what I now know to be his home. I will try and get a picture next time. To cut
a short story long, he is still serving and fly's the ensign always when he is at home.

He was a bit wary on first mention of the flag on the roof but, later added I was the first to notice it was the red ensign,
people I guess all over do things in an own way, this guy does not live at Buck house or Windsor castle but, his mates
know when he is at home from the sea.

    Keith.

I can ensure you that the Red Ensign will be flying again from the 3 main towns of Ramsgate, Margate, Birchington in East Kent on September 3rd; with wreaths laid by the Independent Vindicatrix of East Kent Association and the Marine Officers of Thanet plus press reports / letters in the local newspapers. We will remember them.

I will be flying the flag but as usual it will be from my flat window as no pole available.

With few public flag-hoisting ceremonies being organised this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Seafarers UK is asking local authorities, councils, businesses and organisations with flagpoles at their premises to fly a Red Ensign on 3 September.

The symbolic act of flying a Red Ensign ashore provides a timely opportunity to raise public awareness of the UK’s ongoing dependence on all merchant seafarers.

Will you be flying a Red Ensign ashore on Merchant Navy Day 3 September?

A new guide to taking part is available to read online or download. This recognises that public gatherings will not be appropriate this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. But highlights the opportunity for Red Ensigns to be proudly flown on civic buildings to show widespread support for all those merchant seafarers on whom the UK depends for the import of food, fuel, medicines and other essential goods.
