Good Irish is to my mind far better than Scotch.
Maybe the Peat has some influence on the taste and smoothness of it.

As to Black and White.

I was told a story many years ago by my aunt.
The Daughter of the owner was a cousin to the mother of my aunt.
Apparently she met an English guy, fell in love with him and married.
As a result her father cut he out of the family.
For many years after he son attempted to get her back into the family, no luck there.

and quite popular here

I hav'nay had a drap o the cratur in along time. Bowmore 15 year old or Glenfarclas 10/15 year old were my choice depending on the funds! Blends were a hit or a miss.

JW is firewater. Believe me. You don't see it here in Aberdeen. More of a rum guy myself but living so close to so many good whisky distilleries I've been 'educated'. The flavour mix in a single malt is too intense for a normal human pallet (apparently). If you visit a distillery, they serve it room temperature, then add half the whisky volume of room temperature water to dilute it so that you can appreciate the flavours. Get a bottle of decent malt and try it - it works for me. Don't drink it all - the second half will be wasted. As indeed you will be.

In the late seventies I had to go to IBM Montepellier on a computer course. The French lecture on meeting me, ah "Scottish, I, love Scotch" he was drinking Scotch, can't remember the name. I said you should try malt, never heard of it.
Course was interrupted, had to return home, two weeks later back in France.
I took a bootle of Glen Grant, gave to him. He told he was having friends round that, I suggested he kept whisky for himself.
Next morning, he looked rough, I asked what was wrong, sneaky very sneaky whisky. After his friends had gone he poured a glass, very smooth, he another, and another, he eventually to save walking took the bottle to the room he was watching TV on. Before he realised it he had drunk more than half, he liked it. But his description of very sneaky has always stuck with me.

I have just seen a bottle of Sun Tory Japanese whisky in Sainsbury's for £30 which reminded me that in the 60s if you took a bottle of any single malt ashore the bar owners would swap it for a bottle of Suntory and free entertainment for the night !:
