Re: box boats
General cargo can be carried in box ships but I guess it is expensive. This photo was taken in Rotterdam on board CMA CGM Thalassa in January 2012 Cargo in box ship.jpg

Re: box boats
The vessel in question is the 'Bright Sky" and she is classed as a general cargo ship rather than a container ship. She can carry general or bulk cargo in the holds and container on deck. Another clue is that you will never see a dedicated container ship with cranes.

Re: box boats
In 1960 I was on the bridge of a Blue Funnel ship, EURYADES,
we were slowly making our way through the anchorage in Singapore,
We passed close by a traditional old fashioned cargo ship, five hatches, ten derricks, and on the foredeck was a container,
The Captain said to the pilot, " What is that"?
the Pilot said, " That is the future and the end of Blue Funnel"
They were building a new fleet of traditional cargo ships, `MELAMPUS`` class.
"What a load of rubbish " our Captain answered.
Containers are here, Blue Funnel is Not.

Re: box boats
Speaking with my neighbor who works in Port Melbourne senior crain controller
He tells me that at times grain is actually carried in some of the containers as well as in the hold of the vessel.
But at time he has said the containers do not hold so well lifting off the ship with grain spilling out across the dock.
Happy daze John in Oz.
