Lodon docklands
Just a heads up to a program on CH5 tonight at 2000hrs, its title is The Thames, but focusses on the docklands and its importance to trade in our era. Its not showing as a repeat, so could be worth a watch, kt

Doc, some time ago when I said I have a collection of Snow Bow DVds you asked me what I would recommend for you to buy, I did ask
what your preferences are but you never replied so it was forgotten. After reading your post to keith, I now know what you would like so
I've made a short list, they were doing a buy two get one free at that time, I don't know if that deal still stands. Home - Snowbow Productions Maritime Film Archive
{The Great Port of London, Part one}.......{The Great Port of London, Part two}

Re: Lodon docklands
Watched the program, it was interesting but more about the building of Canary wharf and how the Thames barrier works and how it has saved large parts of London being flooded. Bit about the Bowbelle disaster that, according to the program, was caused by restricted views from the wheelhouse of the dredger and which led to changes in maritime legislation that meant that vessels, irrespective of their draft, have an unrestricted view from the wheelhouse.
Some good shots of a Blue Funnel job and of stevedores handling all sorts of cargo ( but not showing them pilfering, which went on a lot). Ended up showing how containers ended the livelihood of all those stevedores and the lightermen.
Apparently there is to be one about the Jersey next week? So keep an eye out for that.

Re: Lodon docklands
On the Flatties you could never see what was in front of from the bridge when in ballast, it was a wing of the bridge job and mostly starboard wing regardless of weather direction. For non navigators that was your give way side 'any vessel which has the other on her starboard side shall give way to that vessel, the other vessel is to maintain her course and speed' not the exact wording but near enough. The Bowbelle was in a difficult situation as she was restricted to central arches, as we all were on flatties when navigating the Thames, the Marchioness was supposed to sail under the outer arches, but for some reason chose to use the centre arch on that occasion.

Re: Lodon docklands
That was Article 19 Ivan ... when two power driven vessels are crossing so as to so as to cause the risk of collision , the vessel which has the other on her own starboard side shall keep clear of the other. Article 18 was vessels meeting head on nearly head on . So as a previous post Article 15 must have been fishing vessels. Thanks for the jolt to the memory. JS .
As to the Thames and the old sailing barges I sailed with a bloke years ago who served his time on them, he was the boy part of the crew which consisted of a skipper and boy and that was it. Now have to try and remember what ship and his name now. But sailed with that many people will be a bit harder than the Rule of the Road.
Cheers JS,

They do have some great stuff John and I love the nostalgia of their video clips, but snowbow are different, I know you have some as I can remember
you saying it would bring a tear to a glass eye , I think snowbows films are more dedicated to us as we knew these ships, whereas youtube are for
anyone who has an interest in ports and shipping, but youtube are really great for supplying just about anything you wish to see, cheers

Yes John Snowbow put so much into their videos.
I have a few, care of Vernon, mainly of UCL but a couple of the NZ run as well.
Good bit of nostalgia on a cold Saturday afternoon.
Happy daze John in Oz.
