Wages and Conditions of seamen today
I was led to believe that every employer was liable for the welfare of his employees. This includes seafarers. For example in the North Sea the maximum for the accidental death on a ship was 30,000 pounds in 1988. Medical treatment abroad was paid by the shipowner who claimed off his insurers .
I noticed a statement made by the media on the news that the present virus has cost WA. X thousands of dollars re hospital treatment which I assume covers all the seafarers placed in hospitals and quarantined in shore establishments. I question this as. Maybe false information or crass lack of knowledge by people who should know better.. If someone has picked up the tab in full for seafarers medical bills, then maybe they are In the wrong job and should be seeking employment elsewhere. Even tourists to this country have to pay their own way as regards hospitals and doctors bills, seamen should be covered, if they are not , then they definetley need a union. JS

John
This is what all employers are meant to adhere too regarding wages and conditions of their sea going employees.

Hi John,
Maybe, to quote you, '...false information or crass lack of knowledge by people who should know better' is apposite, possibly to say that the costs will be born by the shipping companies insurers would not make such sensational copy!
Cheers, Paul.

Re: Wages and Conditions of seamen today
I’m just pointing out what was said as regards costs to the taxpayer. Which I believe to be false information or at the very least twisted to appear to the observer to be distant to the truth. Medical assistance costs the patient money in Australia unless you have private insurance or are an OAP and a citizen. As a seafarer in Australia I never paid for medicals the shipowner did. He probably claimed off the insurance and my NHI I paid in the UK. JS

Hi John,
Just to be clear, and I thought I had done so, I agree with your sentiments.

Re: Wages and Conditions of seamen today
As have said Paul I struggle to make out the written word these days , and had just received word of the death of a friend and the near and expected death of her beloved spouse due to the dreaded lurgy in the UK , so wasn’t reading very well in any case. And yet we still get these idiots going around in mobs. I don’t know about fire hoses maybe flame throwers may be more appropriate . The dregs of humanity. Cheers JS.

Re: Wages and Conditions of seamen today
Here in Oz any seaman on a ship which docks and shows that he has the Virus then he is either isolated on the ship or brought ashore.
If ashore he will be taken to a hospital first instance then into isolation for 14 days.
The cost so far has been taken up by the Federal gov.
So far the cost to the gov for all persons isolated in hotels around the nation is about $18 mil.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Wages and Conditions of seamen today
Inadvertently those costs will go to the insurance company’s John. As regards the seamen their costs wil, be picked up.by their employers. If the government doesn’t do this it shows their ignorance on the laws that they instituted JS

You are correct there John, the costs will be passed along to the end of the line, where ever that may be.

Re: Wages and Conditions of seamen today
Maybe a bit off thread but this shows that the maritime labour convention does have some bite.
