If it was April I would have thought this was a joke, but?

Definitely not written by a seafarer, but by someone who fits the bill of 'a little knowledge is a dangerous thing' any observant OOW on noticing his/her vessel was going round in circles would be able to switch off the autopilot and revert to manual operation, and the writer talks as if the gyro compass was a new addition.

It is not the first report of outside influences affecting ships navigation equipment, but ship's staff can surely over ride such systems, as surely you cannot influence the gyro compass with outside sources, but in this electronic world who knows what can occur.

Reminds me of the time i was on the wheel on a United Baltic boat, and dozed off on the wheel for aa couple of minutes, she was swinging right round, and gave the 3rd mate palpitations when he came out of the chart room. the steering system was port and starboard buttons, not the traditional wheel, and my hand was obviously on the button, was only seconds into a nap, but thank god we were not in the shipping lanes, lucky not to get logged, memories eh, kt

Maybe they had a gyro compass similar to this. No moving parts and requires a input from a satellite system.

#4 We live and learn John, must have seemed a good idea at the time, no moving parts, how we would have loved that.

Remember when we had an experimental auto pilot on the Magnetic Compass - ship was all over the place - suddenly went hard a port, fortunately I was in the wheelhouse and managed to disconnect it and get her back on course just in time as I had a ship coming at me on the port bow - phew. Nobody knew what to do with it so we had to set watches again with helmsmen. It was supposed to be progress - never saw one again on the magnetic compass, they were always on the gyro.

Some of the converted trawlers in the North Sea had them Chris .in the first year I was there I finally got round to the mate and asked him where the gyro was as the magnetic compass was just via a telescope from, the monkey island. His remarks that we didn’t have one rather shocked me as at the time I hadn’t yet learned to oresume nothing. However that particular ship had no trouble with, other ships had nothing no gyro no automatic , so for one trip got away with hand steering for 12 hours a day , the mate doing the other 12. Although usually one of the seamen would come up for a couple of hours to give us a break. So if in transit it was just 10 hours a day. JS
