    Default The congressional gold medal

Interesting article on how any American ww2 MN surviving members can be awarded this medal in honour of their wartime service.

U.S. Merchant mariners had an 18% death rate, the highest of all branches of the U.S. armed forces. The U.S. Marines, the next branch, who stormed the beaches of the pacific islands had 14%.

I think you will find also Rodney especially from those who go into the subject that the British MN had more casualitys when expressed as a percentage of the total number , than all of the British armed forces. The US mercantile Marine deserve the congressional gold medal regardless. Britain gave Malta a whole Island of people
The George Cross the highest Civilian Award possible if the US MM deserve it then give it to them. Regards JS

Medals are forever,Orders are not, only for. Some. ?
I think a medal once awarded it would take an act of Parliament to have it rescinded.
For examples to Orders I seem to recollect some famous jockey may have Been Gordon Richards lost his OBE for income Tax evasion.had to return it or it was taken off him.
And by the same token another, famous author, who was knighted , was brought up in a criminal court for kerb crawling , he was not even censored and is now a member of the House of Lords. Horses for courses, you have to have faith in ones own honour system but there are times it does touch the bounds of credibility. JS

#7. Thought I would get it wrong , I stand corrected. Gordon Richards went on to get a knighthood I believe. And the Lord who sits in the House of Lords used to write fiction stories about horse racing. Cheers JWS..

7 i think the one to which you refer John, is Lord Archer, was imprisoned after lying in court, as you say, wrote a novel while inside. later was accused of insider dealing in stocks and shares, i don't think he was convicted for that. A thoroughly dislikable character, was at one time one of the Tory government seniors, kt
