    Default Kent messenger

In the latest issue of the above weekly newspaper is an article about the ship Richard Montgomery, which lies off Sheerness.
There is talk in the article about removing the masts that are above the water.
It seems they are rusting badly and may fall off and cause a massive explosion.
When they cut the masts there is the possibility of the masts falling anyway.

Hi Keith, if you are interested in learning more about the Richard Montgomery and how she came to be there, I did a thread on
her story, which also covered f the surrounding area, the Thames Estuary has a very interesting wartime history, i've done more
research on it but eyes have been playing up and I gave them a rest, hope to do a bit more soon. The thread is in the Merchant
Navy in Wartime forum, it's titled The Thames in times of war, cheers

The BBC programme Coast included a run down on the "Richard Montgomery" while in the Thames area. I can't find it on the web. but this from the BBC though 2013!

Mike, The Kent Messenger had forgoten all about that news paper did not even know it was still in print.
My dad loved it and would read cover to cover each week.
Good to see it has survived.

As I recall it she dragged her anchor and went up on the sands, when the tide went out she broke her back.

Ref post 3, that was an interesting read, i had always thought that she was there as a result of enemy action, now it is clear it was a grounding. I know that with her cargo there is danger of a massive explosion, but leaving the problem for 70 odd years it was never going to go away. I guess now it is even more unstable, something will have to be done eventually , very interesting, and selfishly glad i live a long way away, kt

Hi Keith, well if she does blow she won't be the first to do so in this area, built 1656 HMs London was a 76 gun ship of the line, she was one of the
escorts that brought Charles II back home from France during the restoration, one day in February 1665 she sailed from Chatham in river Medway,
as she sailed out into the Thames she suddenly blew up, her wreck lies not too far from Southend, over three hundred were killed and 20 odd
were blown clear and were pulled from the water. Samuel Pepys came down from London and at that time she was partly above water, the only
conclusion they could come to was that a candle or such had been taken into the gunpowder store.
In 2008 Boris johnson was all for a floating airport in the Estuary, thankfully it got kicked out, it seems no importance was put on the RM wreck at
that time, everyone on both sides of the river were up in arms about it, I think if the RM blows it will cause some flooding and damage to property,
mainly roof tiles and windows, but what ddo I know??, cheers.
