Ships Accommodation - your experiences

Yes Den, Remember them well sometimes they where more like storm boxes also know as the KYBO Which i think is Ozzie slang i remember a race horse winning the xmas hurdle at Kempton Park 1979 trained by Josh Gifford i told a few people what a KYBO was and where it originated know one believed me, Especially after a large portion of that pepper soup. Would love to wake up in any of the bunks I slept in now as miss the buggers. Did not go much on the cabin on the Esso Chelsea as it was basically an oiler doing the rounds of power stations on the Thames so most crew would go ashore most nights as they where local lads and the cabin stunk of sweaty socks and dirty clothes. Only did five days on her as this was the discharge to clean my book. Like the double cabins as that meant that it was one of the real ships of the day and would be as they said? Chatty but happy.

Cabins on the Fyffes 'R' steamers (Rhonde, Riotan & Rio Cobre) were all pretty good built in Alabama with flat bottoms to get up the central american rivers, they were single cabins with the bunks set fore/aft, smashing in the river nightmare mid atlantic during a blow.
Fortunately there was a 3 foot square wardrobe where you could squat down and get some sort of sleep without getting thrown out of the bunk and smashing your head on the sink positioned in just the right place.
Scoops for aircon except for the dining room and the very nice mahogany lined bar, hot as hell in the engine room, sheer luxury!

i was on deck on several union castle ships and we were six to the cabin

Stewards on the Orontes, were 12 in a cabin worst accommodation I have ever served in no air conditioning, the Red Sea used to be bad, big difference on the Windsor Castle, four to a cabin, shared it with three other East Coast Scots , we had a great time.

First trip on the Warwick Castle. 8 to a cabin with one port hole.
Other ships. 4 to a cabin, 3 to a cabin,2 per cabin, and joy, single berth on two ships.

Same as myself Den, towards the end of my time (AB), after 6-4 berth cabins, the joy of single berth, and midships as well, !!!! no longer aft listening to the steerage flat, and the prop etc, kt

Same here on the Warwick Castle had an 8 Berth Cabin, very cramped and hot through the Tropics and Suez etc, but we managed as always!
Recall the times we used the old Air Scoop in the Portholes so as we could get some Air Flow,they were quite good actually!
