Re: Ships Accommodation - your experiences
On UCL ships #12 you were a bit unlucky.
Most of the alternative females on the later ships were mainly in first class, wingers or BR.
They were all in the one area of crew accommodation so there was little chance of two in a bed in other parts of the accommodation thankfully.
Though I recall one peak steward who would do the rounds of early shake down with the call of
'Hands of c**s, on with socks'
Or
'Wakey wakey rise and shine you had your W**k, now I want mine'
cherrie sort of soul

Re: Ships Accommodation - your experiences
#20 One of the reasons you got washing machines on ships, idea was that one of the stewards would act as laundryman for a few Bob every month . We got machines in Dalgliesh s just prior to 1966 , they’were 3. Small household machines . No one volunteered to be the laundryman , so they became a fixture for personal use. laundry carried on being sent ashore , and Dalgliesh was 300 pounds poorer. Maybe why they came out of shipping at a later date ? JS

Re: Ships Accommodation - your experiences
On the SA Vaal, cabin had washbasin, day bed three quarter width bun bed, chest of drawers and day bed. On the Clan Ranald, all of the above, with the exception of a large fitted desk with drawers under.
Clan MacIntyre, all of the above including shower/toilet. Officers accommodation was ex passenger.

Re: Ships Accommodation - your experiences
BP had washing machines, can't remember if they all had them, but I don't think we washed our sheets.
We went on strike on one ship, the Karu in NZ as there was no washing machine, and running from Auckland to Bluff in the winter was no joy trying to get your gear washed. If I remember correctly the strike went on for a week, then they sold her from under us for scrap, she sunk when being towed to Asia, she was that full of rust we were lucky she didn't go down when we were on her. That was my last ship.

Vic #26, yes wash basin in the cabin , very good.
Only ever on one ship where I had the luxury.
Great at 0200 hours when you needed a leak, no rushing to the heads.

I used to admire the tenacity of the Crewe boys down the West coast of Africa, Always remember when i was in the Kano Palm, Them guys came aboard in Freetown they cooked/ate/slept/washed shaved/ and just about everything else in the Foc,sle head i got invited for dinner by one of them one night Pepper Soup contained just about everything at there disposal fish heads included, Good nose bag actually and boy did it keep you regular.
