Default Great Uncle serving in Merchant Navy - please help me find more!

    Hi,

I hope I am posting this in the right place and hoping someone can help after many, many searches!

My Great Uncle was in the Merchant Navy but I'm looking to find out more about his service as I am really interested in understanding more.

    I have the following details:
    Name: Eric Noon
    Discharge number: R276242
    DOB: 12 Nov 1924

I have a document from the National Archives which is for a WWII medal issued to Merchant Seamen that he is listed on. I've attached the document here, it has lots of boxes circled as well as another number at the end of his row. It would great to understand what any of this means!

I really appreciate your help. Any insights or direction on where I could find more would be really helpful (I've used Ancestry, government websites, national archives and other ancestry websites).

    THANK YOU!

If your great uncles records have been digitised you can get them as a free download whilst the NA is closed:

The first entry is for the 1939/45 Star. The next right the Atlantic Star. The last Column to the right on this line is the 1939/45 War Medal. First Medal marked on second line is Italy Star.

I have more detail if required.

Correct. I can give you the Reference if you want it. You can purchase a copy of the listing if you require it.

    National Archives reference is BT/395.

If you log into the National Archives website and insert "Merchant seamen’s campaign medal records 1939-1945" in the search box it should take you to the page which explains what the Medals are, gives an example of the record format and has function for you to search for the individual name etc.
