That website: https://www.uboat.net/maps/grid.html tallies with the PC Game "Silent Hunter 3"
They use the same grid systems as shown depicted in the website:
Makes the "game" (Of sinking allied convoys!) very realistic with such attention to detail as that.

Hi,

I have been able to access war diary records that show shipping movements. They make reference to K96 and other similar codes. This would appear to refer to map references. Is there anywhere I can get a list of what areas these might refer to? I know they are all in and around Cuba, Florida and Trinidad.

Hi Your reference K96 I think refers to the pennant number of a Royal Navy escort, in this case AUBRIETIA. K96. 1940 Aubrietia was one of the early 'Flower' class corvettes. If this is the case, other references would possibly start with L D or F. Hope this may be of help.

Coming up trumps as ever! YES! The Uboat net link gives me exactly what I need. I have some voyage records of Dad's ship in its travels around the West Indies. It gives comment along the lines "??/??/1943 left EE at 0.630 proceeded to EB arrived ??/??/1943". I do not have the other document in front of me at the moment to be more exact, but that would be a voyage from Port of Spain to Panama for example!

I think you are right that some of the references in my document must be to do with the class of ship, others as I have explained to Doc Vernon are definitely an map area code! i think I am getting somewhere!

Just thinking Hazel do you have any actual movement cards of any of the Ships?
I only ask as they may be of interest to you, ? If you give me a list of the Ships in Question i will see if i can obtain their movement cards but no promises as not all are available !
Need the Year of the Ships Voyage that you are interested in.
