Re: Flying tab nab
Hi Des,
An interesting history.
This was less than 18 months after the end of WWII and the Lowlander was previously the Leme of Navigazione Libera Triestina. As a war prize by USA she was renamed Lowlander, after the war she was handed back to the Italians and renamed Leme.
After the USA took her over, Port Line included her in the the MANZ (Montreal, Australia, New Zealand) Line fleet. Later I sailed on the Port Saint John from Sydney, joined the Connaught Road, London Pool on arrival and did a trip to NZ on the Port Dunedin before joining the Gothic in 1950.
As for Pickers and Choosers I would have taken anything that floated at that time.
Just prior to reaching New York, Boston and Halifax Lowlander was clobbered with terrible weather off Cape Hatteras and it shows in the photo of her in Halifax. She did everything except turn over. By the time we set sale for Oz via Cape Town she had a new coat of paint.
I'm therefore very glad Specksavers weren't around in those days, look what I could have missed.
Cheers,
Richard

Re: Flying tab nab
Yeah Doc, have just entered what I think will be my last year of work and fewer walkabouts, as you call it.
I do look in almost on a daily basis but curb my thoughts on posting. As the saying goes, “ Better to shut my mouth and be thought of as an idiot than to open it and have it confirmed”.
Oops, careful we don’t drift here Doc, we might get logged.

Re: Flying tab nab
I'm not really a drifter, Duke, I just try to steer a steady coarse but memories keep butting in and it's full steam ahead. Like when I saw your location. Nearly fifty years ago I bought this Auld Smiddy in Perthshire and turned the cow byre into self catering units. Sold it three years later and headed of to Jakarta. but look at it now. Bed and Breakfast at the Old Smiddy, Kinclaven by Stanley, Perthshire . You see - Can't help myself.
