Re: Spanish civil war
Not one of Spain’s finest periods (1936–39), but indeed has far-reaching repercussions through the rest of the 20th century with General Francisco Franco’s succession and fascist dictatorship only ending in 1975. The war attracted the attention of international communities, and various foreign artists, writers, and musicians travelled to Spain to support the Republicans, including Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, and Orson Welles to name a few.
A few things to History starting in Spanish / Spain: Tapas, La siesta, Flamenco, La fiesta, Paella, Pablo Picasso, Conquistadores, Salvador Dalí, Sangria, Antoni Gaudí, Bullfighting are a few.

Re: Spanish civil war
Then in 1919 there was the Spanish Flu which knocked off some 50 million out of the 2 billion on the planet at the time.
But according to the records it had nothing to do with Spain, funny that!!
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Spanish civil war
Hi Denis.
I left the UK in 57, so it must have been paidater, possibly a bonus paid over all the troubles there. I was in Abadan when the Yanks re-en stated the Shah, the tugs had taken off and we had to let go the ropes ourselves, was chased along the wharf by very angry Iranians, but they were held of with hoses. The Skipper took her out without tugs. Still no bonus LoL.
