If you order the Transcript for the Ships Crew then from there you could look back and see if he was on any other Ship,as it should have his past Ship/Ships Records showing sp may be an option to get a bit futher in your search

You can also apply to the Records Archive of University of Canada to a Mrs Tanya MacDonald mhares@mun.ca and ask for the Crew List for that particular Ship which has his name registered on her.
There is of course a payment fee but you will first get a quote and then you can go ahead if you want to

Thanks Keith.. Not sure that is him, I don't think he had any military service.

I have since found out that ss Ashton, that he was working on in Grimsby at the start of the year, was owned by Great Central Railways and operated as a passenger and cargo service between Grimsby and Hamburg. Would there be any crew records for this for 1899?

The family had close associations with GCR in Manchester and he severed his time with them, so he may have sailed on the Ashton or he may have been shore based support.

As an aside, not MN related, his father died in 1886 while driving a train through the Woodhead tunnel en route between Manchester and Sheffield. His fireman is reported as having to bring the train into the next station himself.

Could you provide grandmothers maiden / surname ?

Just the way sometimes the archives are recorded - Military Service
also covers MN in records though civilian as to profession.

Can't you put his actual diaries on this site - I was 50 years at sea and would be interested in reading them...

Sorry Struan it is quite fragile and difficult to read. There may be a few pages that would be of interest and possible. It is a Boots Diary so there are lots of medicated adverts at the start with very curious prices. There is also some interesting personal accounts for whisky and cigars etc.

I had a 2nd great uncle who was at Ladysmith. My mother visited my 2nd great-grandfather and his brother and other I.O.W. relatives as a child, and told me the men used to sit around the table on Sunday after dinner and re-fight the battles, using salt and pepper shakers etc. to describe the movement of troops and such.

Most of what I can add is more family related, if required.

Confirmation of dates etc, could lead to confirmation of Mercantile Marine service WW1 POSSIBLY.

The wedding appears to be 2 years later for example.

Thanks Keith but I already know all about him after 1900,it was the years before 1900 that I was curious about. He definitely did not serve in WW1.
