My discharge book number is R689823, and at some point while on leave my ID card was in a right state, and had to be renewed, when the new photo was taken, with me holding the numerical board for the photo, it was only later that i noticed that the photographer had got the number wrong, and it read R686829, i did not bother to get it changed, and for the rest of my time, paid of and joined on the continent several times, and all round the world it was never picked up, kt

My red ID card was issued in 1978 at the same time as the new Discharge Books took over from the old with comments on conduct and ability. They could be left at the bottom of the gangway in Iron Curtain countries. In November 1983 I left a ship in Chittagong and the agent put me in an hotel managed by his cousin instead of straight to the airport. Overnight there was a civil insurrection and the agent had my passport so after a short stay a few guests and myself found transport to the airport and using our credit cards flew out and without difficulty used my red ID card at Heathrow. I increased my card limit just in case of future bother.

Not an MN document, but I was with an Open University trip to Iceland in the 70s. With us was an elderly East European who carried a stateless displaced person's document that allowed him to travel despite no passport. I asked him why he had not applied for British citizenship. He said the concentration camps had made him stateless, and he would stay that way in honour of those who did not make it through.
We camped around the glaciers doing geology. The scenery was astonishing. I asked the old chap (very fit despite his years) why he had no camera. He said, 'I've no need of photographs, I'm old now but still have my eyes and mind.'
    I've never forgotten that man.

I can't remember ever having an identity card only my discharge book. When we moved from NZ to Aus in 72 I had to get a British passport as I hadn't become a NZer, the passport was to late coming so we flew to Aus, my wife had a British passport but I only had my MN discharge book when the immigration in Sydney asked for my passport I handed them my discharge book, they said what's this, I told them my passport was in the post and that I had used my discharge book every where i went, they said oh! OK. Wouldn't happen today; be on the next plane back. Only one thing bad that happened over it, my son who was 12 at the time, and was on my delayed passport has decided to become an Aussie after all these years, the trouble he has had is unbelievable, six months just doing paperwork.

Des, what are you now then, still on a British one or have you been 'fixed' as a Kiwi?

My wife has three, Irish by birth, British by marriage and Australian by naturalization.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Not at all disputing what you say here but seems rather strange that you never had an ID Card,as i think it was mandatory in our days!
Its not a big deal now i know but with your Seamans Pouch or CRS10 there may be one still lingering there ,something that you did not even realize ???
    Oh well.

    Hi Vernon.
I would definitely remembered if I had a photo I.D. as I would have sent it to a Hollywood agent.

Still say that you must have had one Des! If it did not cost so much mate i would have a look,as i see you do have a Record of your Seamans Pouch,so must also have a CRS10 file. It is yours that for sure as it has your R Number etc. From Gorseinon
    Cheers

When i applied for my Pouch after loosing all my papers it was there.
