Ah, good one Brian. This post reminds me of my days around the coast in PNG back in the 60's and 70's. where amongst our contemporaries we had a female skipper. Val (by name). She was an excellent skipper and was like a 'dive bomber' if the local crew got out of hand. Val dressed like a bloke always in khakis. Very well respected Master...make that Captain!

No problem with that as long as it is the best person for the job and not just filling the gender gap to suit the political correct brigade.

Wonder how they will get along with all the other crew?

On our last cruise there wee crew from 47 different countries, the skipper was from Ireland, Kildare, Chief officer and engineer both British and white, with others from,
India, Pakistan, Croatia, Philippines, China, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Peru, South Africa, Canada, England, Scotland, Italy, Brazil, USA, Japan, and too many others to list.
But they all got along very well.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Seamen are a race apart, they know no boundaries, they all have the same mistress who controls their lives and emotions.

During the cold war I was in Ethiopia with a bunch of Dutch technicians working on a Greek ship,( we were operating mobile bagging factories on an Aid Program) one of my guys had an accident and there was a Russian vessel in port, I knew all Russian vessels carried doctors as well as the political guru. First job was to get past the very imposing guard on the gangway, gave him my name with just a slight change and I became Ivan Clohertyski. I was taken to the Captains cabin where-in the said gentleman was supping Black Label and listening to Glen Miller and I was greeted with a bear hug even though he immediately realised I was not Russian and had a good laugh at my ruse.(he shoved the Politico out the cabin) Well they couldn't do enough for us both hospitality and health wise. We got to talking about ships and our own MN's and as he said we are brothers at sea and fcuk the politicians. It reminded me of the time in the 50's approaching Antwerp locks and you'd pass Soviet ships leaving, there would always be a raised waved arm from both vessels as we passed midstream.

    we are a breed apart

After docking and all the officials had left, next on board were the Russians looking to borrow a film or two. Asked why, answer, to improve our English.

Going back to the skipper of our last cruise as said from Ireland.

On closer inspection it shows he was actually born in London but raised in Kildare Ireland.

How many did you sail with who were not British.
Can only remember two apart from Scots and welsh, one from Malta and one Polish.
Rest were either English , Scouse or Mooshes.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
