Super Trawler

You may well complain about the EU and fishing rights, excessive fishing will over time deplete stocks some of which may never recover.
The waters around the UK will then become like those of the medi where excessive fishing has all but destroyed the industry there.

Here in Oz we put a ban on that massive trawler along with a few others that we considered to be against the best interests of the nation.

Regulations here regarding fish limits is strictly adhered to with substantial fines for those who offend.

But if the news is to be believed, and I always have serious reservations about any thing the media puts out, there may be light at the end of the xxxxxx tunnel, but I do hope it is not just one coming the other way.

Our fresh water rivers have over time been flooded with European Carp, brought here mainly by early settlers from Yugoslavia where it is considered a delicacy, but the locals hit back.
It is harvested and turned into 'Charlie Carp' a garden fertilizer.
But we do have Murray Cod, a member of the Cod family that can grow to well over 40 Kilo and lives for up to 40 years if not caught.

Had the same experience as first trip 3rd mate on a tanker,66000 tonner. Came on the bridge at 20:00 to relieve the mate, an ex Esso guy who had been the mooring master in raw panic in Libya, to find us heading straight into the middle of a vast fleet of Russian trawlers, factory ships and supply ships. I asked him could he not have altered course earlier to avoid them all, his reply was "why" and then he disappeared off the bridge. Spent the next 4 hours constantly dodging all those trawlers etc. None of which were exhibiting the correct lights or following the colregs when they where not trawling. By the time my end of watch came around we were clear of the main body of them and I was absolutely knackered from all of it.

THE world’s second-largest trawler has been spotted “sucking up” sealife off the coast of Sussex, sparking fears from fishermen.
According to ship-tracking website MarineTraffic, the FV Margiris, which can carry up to 6,200 tons of fish, has been circling the waters south of Littlehampton since the weekend.
It is currently fishing for horse mackerel in the English Channel.
The Lithuanian “super trawler” was banned from Australia in 2013 after a ban was introduced on large fishing vessels.

Now fishers are concerned sealife will be “sucked up” by the Margiris.
Littlehampton angler Clive Fennell worried fish stocks would be depleted by the Margiris.
He said: “The jobs of fishermen are at stake.
“The Margiris can take in a huge amount of fish.
“What happens is a 200m net is spread out from the back of the ship, but a huge vacuum is used to suck all the fish in.
“The net can stay out for hours and a huge volume of fish is taken in.”

While the Margiris is currently fishing for horse mackerel and pilchards, Mr Fennell worried other species could be sucked in too.
Samuel Stone, of the Marine Conservation Society, said the vessel was “not necessarily unsustainable” but needed to be carefully managed.
He said: “Generally, we’re not monitoring our fisheries well enough in the UK, so this sort of activity does make us nervous.
“Management needs to be very good and proportionate to the scale and potential local impact of these kind of vessels.”
A spokesman from fishing watchdog the Marine Management Organisation said officials had inspected the ship.
He said: “Officers from the Marine Management Organisation boarded and inspected the Lithuanian registered fishing vessel Margiris KL855 on 2nd October.“No infringements of fishing regulations were found.”
A spokesman for Parlevliet and Van der Plas, the Dutch company running the Margiris, said it was operating under European fishing law.
He said: “The Margiris has been boarded by the authorities and everything is fine.” Why this government is allowing to let these leaches sell our Fisherman down the road absolutely baffles me. :mymy:

Bleach auto text again. "Raw panic in Libya" should be Ras Lanuf, though given the state of Libya back in the late 60's early 70's maybe raw panic could be more appropriate.

Chris, whilst I respect your comment on the matter, it is something that will in one way or another effect many, not just in UK.
I am of the opinion that the members should be able to debate it in a reasonable and sensible manner.

If that were possible John then it would have been left on to discuss,but as you well know it all went Pear shaped as usual.
So as Chris says No More of that word here anymore

You certainly want to avoid Bxxxxx on this site, it is allowed on another site and I have never witnessed so much vitriol, insults, foul language and down right hatred spewed out by grown men in over 5000 posts and all they are doing is going round and round in circles and will change nothing.

We have our little spats on here on a variety of subjects but we always seem to sort it out and it is forgotten
