Hope this loads. It's on Facebook and is a letter from a retired master. I have to agree with all he says, especially with regard to interfering shore staff.

He might have been the first Captain I sailed with, a gentleman an excellent seaman and not only a great ship handler but a very good men handler.

So true!
I have sailed with people like him and they get automatic respect from everyone. There are those who achieve these senior ranks and expect immediate respect without earning it.
On another note, it was Shell policy for apprentices to spend a month on bridge / engine room as appropriate. I found it invaluable experience. I also sailed with several deck lads who would come below to offer an extra pair of hands if something major happened.
