Default Where didn’t you go ?

We often discuss the far off places we sailed to but where didn’t we go. When I think back to those days and read various posts on here, I feel fortunate to have done a lot of the “good” runs that we talk about. However, we rarely, if at all, talk about where we’d like to have gone but didn’t. There are exceptions to this of course, such as “ Rapido in Rosario” aka Capt Kong. For me, I never sailed through the Suez Canal and one other place I’d love to have visited was Pitcairn Island.
Anyone else miss out on a good run ashore.

    Hi Duke.
One place I did go many many times was through the Suez and loved it every time. But one place I would like to have gone is New York, me and a mate went down to join the Queen Mary but give it a miss over the accommodation. As a youngster I used to envy my brother who went to New York during the war a few times and brought back all kinds of goodies. But all in all my deep sea time was all over the place.
I also had the good luck to be on some coasters that took me to just about every port in the UK,Europe, Ireland, and the Scandinavian countries.
    Cheers Des

Like Des any USA port would have been good for me, but not to be.
Did do Suez though along with Ascention Island, St. Helena, and one port in China that had a name that sounded like Budgei or similar.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

There are quite a few places that I have never been to ,that I suppose I could have been had I the outlook of what was to be in my life!
But sadly with me being young and sort of "I know it all" then I persued my life with little thought of what was to happen, so missed on travelling to places of much interest.
I did do the Suez a few times on the Round Africa Voyages with UCL Intermediate Ships, plus of course the other ones as well (The Mail Runs)
I have also done other places of interest when not at Sea ,and can only say that although I would have liked to Travel more it was not to be.
Would loved to have done the many Orient Ports those days ,plus possibly far away places like around Russia .
    Cheers

I have seen more of the world since I retired after 45 years at sea than I did when Seafaring.
Anne has done the same. Bet she has seen more of the world than most Seafarers.
She with me while cruising in retirement, has rounded Cape Horn twice, Cape of Good Hope three times. We have done all the Atlantic Islands, from Iceland Azores, Cape Verde, Ascension, St Helena, Nightingale Island, Tristan da Cunha, South Georgia, Elephant Island, Deception Island ashore in several places in Antarctica, all the ports both sides of South America, through Panama Several times, Both sides of central and North America and Canada,.
aLL the P[acific Islands from the Hawaiian group, through Polynesia, including Easter Island and to Pitcairns three times, round New Zealand, Australia, including several trips across the deserts up and down across in camper vans, Indonesian Islands, Bali Java, Komodo ,Malaya, Singapore, many times Viet Nam, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Japan,
India, Gulf States,Egypt, Suez, up the Nile to all the Temples and Cairo Museum Pyramids , ETC, Tunisia, Greece, Portugal, Spain,
So not bad for travelling in Retirement. SHE has now seen it all.
    Cheers

I guess I was lucky as in my 41 years of sailing I visited every continent. North and south America, USA, Canada (both countries east and west coasts), Brazil, China, Africa (north, south, east and western ports), most European countries, Azores, cape Verde, canary's islands, Pakistan (awful place), Australia, both Suez and Panama canals, both coasts of Mexico, Carribbean islands plus the odd central American country. The best places were the Philippines and the Indonesian islands. China was weird as they were just opening up to the west so viewed the Great wall and winter palace in Beijing. The one place I never got to see was the Magellan straight. Was due to go through it on one ship as 2nd mate (even had got the charts etc. Ready for the passage) but at the last minute the charter we were due to start, got switched to another company vessel.
Now happily retired have no real urge to explore the world, just content with a couple of holidays annually to somewhere hot where I can lie by the pool during the day sipping ice cold beer whilst evenings spent fine dining.

During my seagoing and shore careers I visited over 90 countries,(lived and worked in a few) and as there are now in excess of 200 countries guess there are a lot of places I haven't been, although I may have done so under their former names, but they'll always be the name I experienced them with..

Been through lots of canals including Suez and Panama (even helped close one of those in '56!) but always wanted to do the Corinth Canal but alas it still eludes me. but no complaints, I've had an interesting life, even if I hated some of the places, but it was always experience.

I was lucky in my relatively short time to have done SUEZ several times, PANAMA several times Kiel several times and Corinth once on a UBC Baltic boat, although UBC were mainly on a run up to Scandinavia, they had two with home port Hamburg, and the Medi run, used to love the run round the Greek islands, this was long before package holidays discovered them, kt
