    Hi Ivan.
One of the things that made me think he wasn't an Aussie was he was on his own; in Aus there would have been at least three men, one holding the bale steady the other two studying the horse page.
AS for John's observation of the narrow recess for the hatch boards, I can't remember them being all that deep on some of the earlier ships, as I can recall missing the recess and the hatch board falling into the hold.
    Cheers Des

Sorry Des but you are wrong.
If that had ben an Oz port there would have been at least ten men on that. Three to load, one to supervise, two to hold the ladder steady, two to take the bet to the bookies and two to get smoko ready.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

At these advanced years Victoria we live on dreams and memories, we can remember something as clear as daylight that happened nearly 70 years ago, but what the hell did I do yesterday, and she was cute and we spent nearly 30 days together and believe me there was nothing much in Bluff nearly 70 years ago and many paths have been trodden since then, and I was just a shy young lad and her dad was the original man mountain

Des I was on £6 a month of which I left my mum £2 10s 00d a month, and as mentioned before her Dad was the original man mountain, so it was walks and the occasional picture house, with all the locals keeping an eye on you, Bluff was the original one horse town. Very different today so I'm told.

Anyway it was quite different to the WCSA run

    Hi Ivan .
Invercargill was a great place if you kept on the right side of the Maori freezing workers and you didn't mind a girl with muscles bigger than your own, poor little seamen used to used for supper there.

Looking at that pic, I would suggest discharging rather than loading, Two by Two maybe bales of cotton, Being discharged by quayside crane rather than ships gear, Could be anywhere in the U.K. Terry.

A sack of Bluff oysters, a couple of smoked mutton birds and a case of Weitemata beer. Ah, wilderness is paradise enow! Even Hilaire Belloc had his d'ruthers; I forget the name of the place; I forget the name of the Inn; but the wine, my God, was Chambertin!
