Default The economics of the Panama Canal

Interesting video on the canal showing its impact on world trade, far east to USA.

    Very interesting, John.
Just been through again this year and the new BIG locks are open with some very large Container ships passing through.
    Cheers

    Hi John.
Very informative video, funny thing I was laying in bed last night trying to remember what ships I had been on going through the Canal. The info that it is not that great a difference between going the canal route and the Suez from Asia to the States was interesting.

Last time I went through the Panama canal was in 78/79 on a then Panamax bulk carrier. Very interesting squeezing into the locks, mules holding us in position with main engine chuntering on full ahead but only moving ahead at creeping pace. Last time through Suez was in 1988 with C.P. and we had just been informed we were all being made redundant. Had a sale of goods of virtually everything such as t.v's, video players, radios even spare stainless steel piping carried on board for hydraulic line renewal. Great fun haggling with George robey and his mates.

    Hi John.
What amazed me was watching those big container ships going through, I don't think you could have got a razor blade between the ship and the lock; yet she never seemed to scrape the side.
    Cheers Des

I was also impressed with the size of those box boats squeezing through the locks, but also the paintwork on modern ships, just shows the improvement made with marine paints. Not much use for chipping hammers on there !!!, even if you had the crew numbers to do it. kt
