Re: Food at meal times
Bread and butter pudding, spotted dick, bread and dripping etc, these were all fantastic, and designed to fill us kids up during and after the war, jacket spuds was another, but not a lot of butter, Margarine was used a lot instead, kt

Re: Food at meal times
Turkey dripping on toast very tasty, don't know what it does for your cholestorel levels lol. We use to have it after a Sunday roast for supper or at sea on the 12-4 with a couple of beers. Chicken / duck giblets liquidised into pate with shallots and garlic another treat.

Re: Food at meal times
I was at Gravesend Sea School, May 1955, when Newcastle beat Manchester City 3-1 in the Cup Final.
To celebrate, supper that night was a mug of hot muddy cocoa and TWO thick slices of bread and dripping.
Must have been a Geordie duty officer !!
And there were no upmarket wooden tables like the Vindi had...only Formica !
Strangely, I can't remember any other meals I had there, but the smell of boiled cabbage still lingers.

We knew them as baked potatoes in those days Keith, they used to take ages to cook under the fire grate and could be a bit hit and miss at times,
today 5 minutes in the micky wave and McCain's jacket spuds are perfect, that's progress for you , and toast, in those days every house had a
toasting fork, cheers

I don't think there was a cafe throughout NZ or Australia that didn't do the Banana splits and parfaits in the 50's and 60's, but my favourite was always the Banana Fritters with Ice Cream. Always went down well after a plateful of steak, egg and chips !!

Being on my own now and getting my food etc delivered I am now sadly reduced to micky wave cooking, I can still do a proper roast dinner
for Sunday but like some of the ready meals that only take minutes, chicken basil and tomato with new potatoes is good also like Jambalaya,
but do miss the old cooking and this thread started by Vic has brought back some lovely memories, cheers, cheers

Only time I ate ashore was at Buenos aires, the best steak I ever had.

Re: Food at meal times
On the NZ coast I always had mixed grill , steak, sausage, bacon, fried tomatoes, fried onions, egg and chips, they now have started to put it on up at our club, I might give it a go again.
