Post Sidney Federick Tyrrell Merchant Navy cook 1905 onwards

    Hi,

My Great Grandfather Sidney Frederick Tyrrell (often spelt Tyrell) was in the merchant navy serving as a cook I believe from 1905 onwards. He was born in 1880 in Hastings East Sussex and died in 1937 also in Hastings aged 57 but I am unsure when his service ended with the merchant navy. Unfortunately he was known for having a "girl in every port" or so he told my Granddad but married my Great Grandmother Edith Jane (nee Annetts) in 1912 and lived in Hampshire for a while in the Winchester area. He moved back to Hastings at some stage. I would so like to find out any information I can about his time in the merchant navy and wondered where I could get this information from. Can anyone help with pointing me in the right direction please?

Hello Here is a bit of info on Seaman of that time hope it will clear things up for you.
A great pity that Records for the Period were not kept, only a very few.

A pity too that we dont have at least just a start with one Ship name ,as that could lead us to find out a bit more.
I hope that somehow you may get more info ??

Merchant Seamen: Registers of Service, 1835-1857

Merchant Shipping: Crew Lists and Agreements After 1861
Merchant Seamen: Sea Service Records, 1913-1972

'In 1857 the Board of Trade abandoned the Seamen's register reasoning that the agreements and crew lists were sufficient to meet the needs of the department. So, from 1858 - 1913 no register of ordinary seamen's service was kept.'

'For the period 1858-1913 researchers interested in ordinary seamen, that is those not in possession of a certificate of competency or service, will need to use the Agreements and Crew Lists - see Merchant Shipping: Agreements and Crew Lists after 1861.'

    'Agreement and Crew Lists 1861 - 1938 and 1950 - 1994
In BT 99 , The National Archives holds a random 10% sample of the Agreements and Crew Lists, for the periods 1861 to 1938 and again from 1950 to 1994. For the period 1861 to 1923, they can be searched for on the Catalogue (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue) using the ship's Official Number (obtainable from the Mercantile Navy Lists). After that date, the Catalogue gives ranges of ship's Official Numbers. See the separate section below on The National Archives' World War 2 holdings.

When the files were being selected for preservation a decision was taken on how to dispose of all those not taken by The National Archives. The National Maritime Museum took 10% and County Record Offices, took some for the period 1863-1913. The rest, approximately 70% of the Agreements and Crew Lists, 1863-1938 and 1951-1976, were transferred to the Maritime History Archive, Memorial University, St John's, Newfoundland, Canada A1C 5S7 (www.mun.ca/mha/).'

    Hi Keith,

Family knowledge is sketchy I'm afraid. Sidney was disinherited by his family due to "bad behaviour" and any info we have came from my Granddad who didn't like to speak about him as his "womanising" behaviour caused my Great Grandmother to have a break down and end up in a mental asylum. He maybeen based in the Southampton area as comes up on the 1911 census in that area. He met my Great Grandmother near there too, she was a bar maid in a pub that he frequented apparently. They married in 1912 and my Grandad was born soon after in 1913 in Winchester. Where Sidney was between 1901, when he was down on the census as lodging in Surrey, occupation confectioner, and when he joined the merchant navy I do not know. There is a photo of him in his naval uniform with my Granddad, when he was about 4 or 5, so this would be around 1917-1919. As far as I am aware he was not involved in WW1 but I am not 100% sure of this.
Not sure if any of this is any help.

Just wondered if you can explain why you believe he was Merchant Navy
as opposed to Royal Navy ! Every little bit of info helps.

    Regards,

    Keith.

My Granddad told us Sidney was in the Merchant Navy rather than the Royal Navy. I've never thought to question that to be honest.
