Here are two photos of the Queen Mary`s wheel house and telegraphs, and two photos of the Control Platform in the engine room.

First ship I sailed on didn't have any of that stuff. Brass mouthpiece in the wheelhouse and a pipe direct to the engine room controls. Only thing required was a good strong voice. The direct steering chain ran right past the end of my bunk. Sleep had a different meaning!!

Mechanical connections from memory worked well, but no doubt could go wrong.

Modern computerized is good, but when something goes wrong it takes a lot more than just a chippy to fix it.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Hi corrientes.
I was on a ship with rod and chain steering, something I still remember was the chains running below the bulwarks down aft . I do know one thing it was bloody hard going crossing the North Atlantic in bad weather, Ive feel that I still have muscles on my arms from steering her.

To show how far things have come, I was on a ship recently where the Master told me not to worry about the flashing lights on the steering gear as it turned itself off unless it was obeying a helm order! Stop/start steering anyone? What made it even worse was the fact it was a 100,000t oil tanker...

And as an aside, most of the MSC ships (container ships admittedly) I’ve dealt with have been, how shall we say, challenging.

The MSC Opera smashed into a dock located on the Giudecca canal in Venice this morning. Tugs could not maintain control of the MSC cruise ship as it violently struck the dock and then struck the stern of the River Countess (a river cruise ship) which was docked and disembarking passengers, as shown in a number of videos taken of the accident.

You can hear the MSC Opera blasting its horn while it strikes the dock and smaller vessel. Tourists are seen initially running away from the cruise ship. Four tourists were reportedly injured in the incident. People reportedly fell from the gangway to the River Countess into the water in the incident.

This is not the first time that a MSC cruise ship struck a pier in Venice. In April of 2014, the MSC cruise ship, Preziosa, collided with a large passenger walkway at the port of Venice. Newspapers in Italy, such as La Nuova, covered the damage to the pedestrian corridor (called a “finger”) at the maritime station which provide access to the upper decks of the cruise ships.
The latest incident reportedly occurred after the MSC Opera lost engine power and a line from a tug broke.
This incident will add to the debate whether gigantic cruise ships should be permitted to sail in the basin so close to the beautiful buildings of the old city.

This ship is named after the quintessential Italian art form, Opera. And the MSC Opera is a work of art in her own right. The ship is filled with stunning spaces that inspire fun and excitement in the lounges and disco. Spaces like the spa convey an understated elegance with the use of natural stones and tiles. The restaurants like La Caravella Restaurant and L’Approdo Restaurant have a formal atmosphere where the food is the real centerpiece. It’s amazing how the MSC Opera’s design elements compliment the entire feel of your cruise from the fun you have at the casino to the rejuvenation you get at the Aurea Spa.
How many liners in our day can you remember having similar miss haps Something is not quite right and although the last few episode's have been Italian cruise ships in fact MSC Don't have a very good record. These wedding cake cruise ships don't have very good safety records at all. What was the last British crewed cruise ship to take a walk along the quay anywhere in the world. Terry.

Oh, donīt tell me that it is finally beginning to dawn onto the peopleīs minds that filling our countries with niggas, muzzies and other assorted third world trash is absolutely DYSFUNCTIONAL for our societies, even to those who theoretically benefit from the lower wages paid! The Windrush tragedy of 1948 is finally showing all its devastating consequences in our societies, together with the "entitlement" of women, who have proved time and time again that they are definitely NOT up to the tasks men (White men, that is) had appropriately been doing for centuries.
Iīd rather have the ghost of Enoch Powell at the helm of practically anything than any exemplar from this rabble of invaders polluting our European countries, and in particular the UK!
By the way, the full Empire Windrush story would be a very good topic for this forum.
    All the best.

Whilst I support free speech, this is not the the place for such inflammatory and irrational outbursts.
