Re: Current update on the state of the British Merchant Navy
Just goes to show that the Ensign of yesteryear which was flown to represent and protect all those on board , is today just a masquerade to cover up no better than money laundering under the guise of making it legal. This applies to all nations. The same thing as most things in life morality has decreased with the years and the only thing of importance is the love of money and wealth. JS

Re: Current update on the state of the British Merchant Navy
Was there a reason why P&O chose Cyprus? out of other EU countries. Why not France, the obvious choice for trading in the English channel? Answer could be France is unionised, with high standards. Cyprus is a flag of convenience, despite being in the EU. Over half the world’s ships are now flagged out, it’s cheap to register, tax is low, and standards are the bare legal minimum. There are few inspections for food, clean water, conditions for crews / rest / safety etc.
This is what the EU should have prevented, stricter rules about who uses its ports. The US has the 1920s Jones Act stopping any other but US-built, -owned and -crewed ships trading from one US port to another. So why have we not done this? well in the '80s good old G.B. politicians assisted ship owners in doing just this and stuck up two fingers in the requests made to maintain the Merchant Service in its' standards. Hence here we are today jobs, ships all but gone leaving this once great seafaring nation / island to the wolves!

Some years ago, there was a French regulation which insisted 33% of any imports had to be carried in French flagged vessels. I found this out when Shell replaced their small fleet of French flagged vessels by two 550,000 tonne vessels, which covered their quota; also it reduced the manning levels so they saved money at the same time. At that time the French fleet was the most expensive to run with respect to manning costs. British flag had the biggest fleet, closely followed by Holland.

Excellent news, I guess we will have to wait and see that which transpires. I hope for our young people and our nation that it is "Full steam ahead"
