Unknown My Great great Grandfather was MN or RN
Hi All has anyone got any information and identification of the uniform and picture of my Great great grandfather.
Richard Whitehead was born in 1848 in Folkestone, Kent. He married Louisa Ann P Joel in October 1872 in Elham, Kent. They had one child during their marriage. He died in July 1909 in Elham, Kent, at the age of 61.

I look fwd to hearing from you great people in anticipation.

I could not be 100% sure on this but by looking at the Pic, looks more RN to me ??
That Flat type cap too is rather unusual, and again looks something like the old Yanks Service Caps but the Anchor???

From Eltham he must be OK, but agree the cap and to some extent the uniform looks more like something from the American Civil War.

I dont for for one minute question the photograph Nick, Consider that the Merchant Navy was always the Merchant Mercantile, Up until it was given Navy status by King George V after the end of the first world war 1918, It has to be R.N. But i have searched for that uniform and hat no joy mate good luck Terry.

I know how to increase the size photos myself, but the original resolution is to low, so just goes blurry when you increase the size.

#6: Just to save any confusion Elham (pronounced Eel-um) is a village and civil parish in East Kent,
Eltham is a district of southeast London. American Civil War 1861 - 1865.
The indenture for Richard was in 1864.
