A sorry state, but what can we do? I've written to ministers and MPs over the years about sundry matters, but all I've had in return are platitudes of the sort that are lifted from a stack of stock replies that some minion reaches for. We could take to the streets like the French . . .

Whilst I have no doubt the UK ship yards have, and could do so again, produced some of the worlds best shipping there is one problem. Cost!

South Korea is now considered the largest ship building country there is, but the wages there are lower, there are no Unions and the workers do work.

Italy also now builds most of the new cruise ships at the yards in the north of the country.
If the gov of UK really want to do something about it then BREXIT would be a great time to show the world just what British ship yards are capable of.

True h.d. john in oz, wages in Korea are no doubt lower than in the U.K. but the difference is that in Japan, Korea, China and to some extent France and Italy, their government's have a strategy of supporting there ship building industry with there banks offering low cost financial packages to ship owners and in Korea's case in particular telling wealthy individuals to give up land for yards to be built and to invest in same.
The U.K. has never invested in a strategic ship building program and ship yard investment with both main political parties shying away from investing properly in industry's where workers actually get their hands dirty, instead making it easier for workers to work in business suits in financial services etc. Even in the likes of the car industry, the worker's, although they do work hard, operate machines in clean almost sterile environment. Simplistic view maybe but you get my drift.

China will eventually take over from the Koreans, they are already winning LNG pre assembled units for Canada and other places. Some Korean yards were subbing fabrication work to Chinese yards years ago to help Koreans meet completion targets,

The Norwegian government in the 60s and 70s being a maritime nation like The UK used to put out incentives to the people. The likes of a lot of Norwegian supply vessels were built with money subscribed by private individuals, to add to the incentives for doing such tax concessions were awarded to those who did, and you had say 2 or 3 professional people pooling their resources and building a vessel and thus becoming the proud owners of a ship, somewhat akin to buying a racehorse. The British government was content to sit on its backside and let British shipowners buy up the old redundant Norwegian shipping as it became available . Thus the Likes of the North Sea more than . Likely. You were working at a disadvantage with more capable vessels. In my view the various British governmentsi in power since the war years bear a strong resemblance to blinkered donkeys. JS

Hi John.
I have no doubt that if the shipowners and builders in Britain could get people to work for a pittance, Britain would become great again until that time it will be the cheap labour in Asia that will prevail.
