Ship building in the U.K.

Until such time as that cheap labour source goes through the same motions as other countries and want more for their labour’s. It seems to me whenever costing comes into any debate the poor shipowner and the multitude of shareholders are always upheld as the poor victims of union power. If it wasn’t for unions of the past we’d still all be serfs. Every person who works for a living if he has any morals whatsoever will know how much he is worth, and not the lowest arbitrary figure that some employers are want to use. When these third world countries get educated and can do arithmetic and work out profit and loss , then stand by for changes. We won’t be here hope we all die with a smile on our mugs. Cheers JS

The other side to this coin is that there is virtually no BMN left.
With no BMN why would you even consider building ships and what gov would be prepared to subsidize it when overseas ships and building is cheaper.
UK may well be able to build better ships but that is not always what is wanted.


The majority of cruise ships now come out of Italy with only one from Japan in recent years.

In time the wages of many countries such as China, Korea, Indonesia will rise to the level of some western nations, what then?

I did hear though in a conversation that there are thoughts of protecting the MN title, if we end up with no actual MN,
thoughts are that in the future much will only be recalled and paid tribute to by bodies like the CWGC and legion.

If you read the attached article I think you will see that t unless there is a sea change in the U.K. attitude towards commercial ship building, we cannot compete with the far East y ards.
