Time
It’s amazing when. Clearing out what one finds from the past written on old pieces of paper which over the years are now inbedded in the memory. These things hopefully will never change if so they have been taking up too much space of the past....
A Solar year equals 365 days 5 hours 48 minutes and 57 seconds.
sidereal year equals 365 days 6 hours , 9 minutes, 9.4 seconds.
A solar day is 24 hours
A lunar day is 24 hours , and 48 minutes.
A Sidereal day is 23 hours , 56 minutes, 3.4 seconds.
You never know it may come up at a pub quiz some night .

PS And for engineers away from. Time .
Potential Energy is stored up energy.
Kinetic Energy is energy of motion
Horsepower is work equivalent to lifting 33000 lbs. , 1 foot per minute .
Put that all in metric and it takes out what little joy there is if any, in learning.
JS.

Re: Time
Not quite right there on one John.
Potential energy is a council worker leaning on a shovel.
Not actually working, but the potential is there.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Time
I may of given you the wrong but only slightly , meaning. Potential Energy sometimes called Energy of Position, is stored up Energy .
Now that could be getting ready for the next big big strike .
JS.
Now when time and motion first appeared on the scene about 1960 ish. What would be a good title for the crafty sods who used to sneak around with pencil and paper ? Reminds me of that old radio program name that tune , where they had. To name a tune in so many notes invariably the winner was I”ll do it In one. JS

Re: Time
My take on potential energy is, I'm going to cut the lawn, no bugger it, I use that energy to get to my chair and book.

Re: Time
No energy wasted here
LOCATION...LOCATION... LOCATION…
You may have heard on the news about a Southern California man who was put under 72-hour psychiatric observation
when it was found he owned 100 guns and allegedly had 100,000 rounds of ammunition stored in his home.
The house also featured a secret escape tunnel.
By Southern California standards, someone owning 100,000 rounds is considered "mentally unstable.”
BUT…
In Michigan, he'd be called "the last white guy still living in Detroit.”
In Arizona, he'd be called "an avid gun collector.”
In Arkansas, he'd be called "a novice gun collector.”
In Utah, he'd be called "moderately well prepared," but they'd probably reserve judgment until they made sure
that he had a corresponding quantity of stored food.”
In Kansas, he'd be "A guy down the road you would want to have for a friend.”
In Montana, he'd be called "The neighborhood 'Go-To' guy.”
In Idaho, he'd be called "a likely gubernatorial candidate.”
In Georgia, he'd be called "an eligible bachelor.”
In North Carolina, Virginia, WV, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and Minnesota
he would be called "a deer hunting buddy.”
AND, OF COURSE,
In Texas he'd just be "Bubba; who's a little short on Ammo."
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Time
I realize that a lot who use this site may not be aware of what has been said so a brief note on the subject.
Time Used At Sea,
The times used by seamen are Greenwich Mean Time ( GMT). Local ( or Ships) Mean Time ( LMT or SMT) Zone Time (ZT) and Local ( or Ships) Apparent Time ( LAT or SAT)
Greenwich Mean Time is based on the passage of the Mean Sun across the meridian of Greenwich. It is universally adopted for navigational purposes and is sometimes referred to as Greenwich Civil Time , World Time, or Universal Time .
Local or Ships Mean Time is based on the passage of the Mean sun across the meridian of the ships locality. It is GMT plus or minus the longitude of the position.
Zone time is a time measured at every 15th. Meridian and applied to the area 7.5 degrees on each side of it. All times are thus complete hours - from 1 to 12 -different from GMT those In East longitude being plus to GMT. Those in West being minus. It applies only to the seas.
Local or Ships apparent time is based on the passage of the true sun across the meridian of the ships position . The amount it differs from LMT is known as the Equation of Time.

Re: Time
Depending if you were sailing to the east or west as you passed through a time zone, clocks were advanced or retarded one hour. Your watch was either 20 minuets less or extra. I think it was best sailing eastwards. The International Date Line did you loose or gain a day?
