###happily married or not brian there is surely a bit of that poem in most if not all of us ...good poem regards cappy
#7... There you go Cappy didn’t mind at all sailing on ships engaged in a mationized industry. Those ships most were on 15 year bare boat charters to the government. The shipowners were sitting in clover. Similar to MOD charters one ship I was on was on 10,000 pounds a day , think it was a 10 year charter. All fuel and incidentals paid by the charterer. I see no evil in government sponsored shipping as long as the management is not there for a quick killing. A lot of shipping was foreign owned during the Falklands war and had to be hired at exorbitant rates, and that will be only the countries willing to hire their vessels out for war purposes. A national Merchant Navy is a definite requirement in a modern world. Even the USA keeps an undisclosed number of mothballed merchant ships. JWS
#10. Brian have I your permission to repeat your poem ( all copyrights reserved) to a group of ex business people who have asked me to give a talk on my years at sea, it may help to break the ice a bit. There are a couple of short term ex seafarers among the group so they at least won’t be disturbed by any sexual innuendos , don’t know about the women though , although today they have equal rights to everything , so can take it or leave it. Will have to figure a way of printing off the computer or is going to be a long hand job. No innuendos intended. JS...
Yes, feel free to use it John.
My old friend Joe Hirder, now deceased, the man who designed the ESSO NORTHUMBRIA class of VLCCs used it at a meeting of EXXON shareholders in the United States, and said it had a great reception.
In the first line, ......
I went to the Vindi, when I was a lad.
it is better to say......
I went to the Sea School when I was a lad,............., as they will not know what the Vindi is.
If you like I can give your name as the author or just say written by another old salt. I darent say too much as my wife will be there also. Pity you weren’t here as could up and said your own piece to keep them happy. Is just a Probus club but don’t know how many will be there, as the word gets out to other Probus clubs whenever they have a speaker. Was landed in this situation by someone else , who is probably having a good laugh over it . Cheers JS
Yes you can John.
anything you want to, no probs.
I will be in OZ in March but not on your side, the ship goes from Sydney to Townesville, Cairns and Darwin.
Cheers
Brian
Wonderful stuff cappy and good on you both. Met my dearly beloved in East London (SA) in 1952 while on the City of Canterbury. Married in UK in 1954 while she was on her big OE - and failed to go back home. Still together though both a mite older. Happy 2019 to all from both of us.
