Saw this on the internet and found it very interesting. Used to to get to Belfast with acid for Irish Fertilizer.

I was well in with certain `high ups` in Cunard and was told that Cunard wanted Harlands to build the QUEEN MARY 2, Harlands asked Tony Bliar Government to finance the first stage of the new build to the next stage when Cunard would pay for that, Bliar told them NO! and the new build was transferred to a bankrupt yard that had been closed,
Chantilliers in france, . so with french government help it was built there.
That halted ship building in HARLANDS. and a lot of people lost their jobs.
It is a magnificent ship. I did the Maiden Voyage on her January 2004.
Chantelliers have never stopped building ships ever since. Thank you Bliar.

No nothing there just an advert for Guardian Industries.

Most of the workers rejected a recent management proposal for a three-year "no strike" agreement with unions. Maybe this had a bearing on why the government did not really go for broke on the deal.

Shame as an opportunity lost.
