Re: Christmas Presents For Seamen.
I do not remember ever getting Christmas presents from any of the seaman's missions from around the world, I stayed at the mariners club Hong Kong at Xmas twice in the 80's when looking for work and can not remember anything exceptional beside the usual Christmas decorations during the festive period. I received presents 4 times from ship owners each time the owners were from Norway. One of those owners (Forlans Seismic) even flew Christmas decorations, trees etc. and presents out to the ship in the Seychelles which I never experienced on any British flag vessels I sailed on.

Hi Ken I was asked was I going to that World Ship Society but not really my scene. Are you still going to Crosby library a couple of times a week to use the computer?there are two in the mission that never get used (I think there were about 24 at one time) and you wont have to book.Plus you can have your nice pint of Guinness for the low price of £2.50. I was a bit weary of drinking the Guinness there as I wondered how long it would be laying in the pipes but it is surprising how popular it is with the seamen of all nationalities,John cleans the pipes and pump every week and I'm sure it is a fresh barrel every week.

Re: Christmas Presents For Seamen.
I spent one Christmas and new year on a Norwegian seismic ship in the Singapore straits filling in for someone who went sick. It was the turn of the century 2000 with all the scares about computers going haywire etc. they did a good Xmas due to the lay out the owners produced, even low alcohol booze..Norway has always been good to its seafarers and treat them with all the respect they deserve. The uk although an ex seafaring nation mostly has treated its seafarers with a lot of disdain over the years. JS.

Re: Christmas Presents For Seamen.
Thanks Jim. I am into the 200s now.
Always knit in dark colours and then put port for'ard and starboard colours in a stripe so if you see anyone wearing a hat like that - it's one of mine ! I send mine to Southampton to the Sailors' Society. I buy the wool from the Charity shop so that's a double whammy !
A lady from Church has just given me a pile. They are well -knitted but for some mad reason she has changed the pattern and now some of them wouldn't fit a newborn !....... Pete has told me to bin them but I have decided to unpick and re-knit. Haven't the heart to tell her what she has done !!
Best wishes to you for Christmas and to yours
Brenda

Re: Christmas Presents For Seamen.
I can remember hoisting the xmas tree aloft on the foremast aboard Anchor lines Eucadia, The best crimbo I hade at sea was aboard the Windsor Castle remember all hands on deck being stood down in East London not sure if it was Boxing day or the day after, Spent the day on the beach with a few cases of Ansell's just took in the delights of the lovely ladies walking around half naked as we where, Happy days lads Terry.

Re: Christmas Presents For Seamen.
#17... Terry have been waiting for the obvious question for the Eucadia s Christmas tree, did you get any volunteers to be the fairy at the top ? Was this before or after Runcimans moved up to Anchor line offices in Glasgow about 1965. Cheers JS
