Hain SS Co. Ltd. - Harpagus ("Halfpagus") -> Treworlas
My grandfather. W. T. Evans (Trevor) worked for the Hain SS Co. Ltd. and was on many WW II Atlantic and Russian convoys (including being torpedoed off Brazil, but that is another story I shall post about separately). Towards the end of the war the Harpagus was damaged by a mine. The stern half (evidently nicknamed the "Halfpagus") apparently was towed to the Tyne, sold to Hain, and used in the creation of the Treworlas - more details are here. I have seen a few threads referencing this in this forum but I thought I would start a new one exclusively about it. Mods - hope that is OK.
Trevor was evidently chief officer on the Treworlas after it was relaunched in 1946 and by 1952 had been promoted to Captain. I have a number of newspaper clippings about this that I am attaching here.
My interest to follow this up was piqued after my mother's recent death and my consequent receipt of a ship's clock that hung in Trevor's home and then in her home and is now in my home (and will be in my son's home eventually). This was always referred to as "The Harpagus" in my family since, evidently, it came from the original Harpagus but was replaced in the Treworlas and given to my grandfather. I took it to a clock maker for cleaning and service and he described it as one of the finest examples of (non-chiming) British ship's clocks he had seen.
I see there are a few people who have posted some years back about serving on the Treworlas - I realise that tempus fugit but I wonder if anyone here has any more first hand knowledge, especially about my grandfather's service on that or any other Hain SS Co. ship.

I served on the Treworlas in June 1958, it wasn't until fairly recently that i learned of her wartime mining, and subsequent lengthening forward. I understand a couple of years later she ran aground on a reef and declared a total loss, kt

Only this year was i able to get to the Hains museum in St Ives, Corwall, there is a photo of her in there , with the foredeck gone, as the Harpagus. Just looked in my battered discharge book, and neither signatures appear to be Evans, kt

Hello Hugh W

I hope we may at some stage be able to assist with some info,i myself would not have known your Grandfather,so cannot assist however have you his Seamand Pouch and Crs10 Papers at all?
If not then these would at least give you info on the Ships he served on where he joined etc.
So if you could list his Place and DOB I can look those up.
I see two names that may be him ??
One Born Swansea 1939 and the other in Liverpool 1935 are any of these him at all??
Cheers

Thanks @Doc Vernon. He was born in Cardiff 22 November 1898
I have various letters of recommendation for him that will identify ships he served on - I will dig them out. I don't believe that I or any of my cousins have the papers you refer to however.
