Re: Can anyone recognise Cappy in this
Remember it pretty well. Especially Jim Slater. In 1957 he was working on the colliers as I believe a greaser. I spent a short time working in the office at 56 Pilgrim Street and during this period they were all boasting in the office that Jim Slater was barred by the. NE shipowners association as was considered a stirrer. Later when he became the secretary of the NUS they were falling over themselves to placate him. Remember one of his statements much publicised by the press was the use of electric chipping hammers, when he said if a seaman is asked to use, he should say I am not qualified to use such. There was much bad press attributed to him as there always is against most unions. He was made out to be the spawn of Trotsky , Stalin and Lenin all rolled into one. Never personally met the man , but was told he used to roll around in a chauffeur driven car , maybe he considered it the spoils of war and was competing with the shipowner who knows . Doubt whether Cappy followed his so called doctrine. Many others did at the time. He must have had good points somewhere , maybe he loved his wife if he had one. JS

Re: Can anyone recognise Cappy in this
Got it now!
Isnt that cappy in the third Pic at the rear just hiding away?? LOL
cHEERS
And then there he was with his Chainsaw felling a Tree to disrupt the Trains! LOL
Commuters are urged to leave extra time for their journey this morning as there are major delays between St James, Newcastle, and Chichester, South Shields, due to a tree on the line at Cullercoats. (A man answering the description of one called "cappy" wearing an Andy Cap type hat was seen earlier in the Area ) LOL They got him!!
