the Trade training was a brilliant idea , and the discipline , including the old , you lads were all due for a weekend pass , 'till your mate ere upset me now you aint' going nowhere , and by Monday another dissenter was back in line . I have met a few national servicemen who trained and gained and a few who counted the days , I would bring it in today for five years for a lot of the guys without direction , but human rights would temper it all today

A suggestion was put forward by an MP here, a sensible one hard to understand, that some form of conscription be brought back.

Not run by the Army, rather by either the prison service or some other body.
It would be a six to twelve month course to attempt to teach young nere do wells the errors of their ways.

Good idea to teach them disipline and life skills.


But no, the do gooders cringed at the idea so it was dumped.

They tried something along those lines here a long time ago with young offenders, maybe in 80s. It didnt work, but possibly because a lot of the staff were bully boys in uniform; many of them now being investigated by the police for abuse (physical and sexual) of the prisoners they were meant to reform.

Hitler had no such second thoughts just put his offenders in the SS penal brigades. JS

I am new to this site but really excited about the amount of information and stories shared. Like you I'm shocked at the lack of awareness about the bravery and contributions of merchant seamen in WW2. I married into a Jamaican family and I am particularly interested in Jamaican Merchant seamen who worked on the Arctic convoys as I have embarked on writing a novel that hopefully i can pass on to future generations of my family. If you have any information in particular about Jamaican or carribbean crew I would be interested in hearing from you. I have read about Victor Brown and Winston Murphy and look forward to reading your book 'The Restless sea'. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards Angie
