I think my now deceased FAther may have been at Vindi in the 1940's. Is there any infomration i.e. a list of names, of those who were at Vindi available either on the web or elsehwere?

Got talking to guy on MN day,was telling me about one of the tranies who had a spell in the army told him that the bullshit in the army was soft compared with the Vindi at least you were well fed told him the army training and conditions were 5 star in comparison with the Vindi .i was there oct to Dec 1958 and it was bloody freezing certainly set you up for life at sea. I wonder how many of us are left? Dave.

The Arranmore as she was first named was dismasted off Cape Horn and towed to the Falklands, She was later sold to the germans and in the 1st world war she was used as an accommodation ship by the german Navy, named Waultrude, after WW1 she was returned to England and renamed Vindicatrix as she had been vindicated for working for the enemy.
she then became a training ship in the London Docks and then to Gravesend, at the start of WW2 with the Blitz, she was towed round to Sharpness and stayed there until January 1956. and went to Newport for scrapping, Sold for £2,500. less than a second hand car, A vindi lad tried to buy her but demolition had started.

Can't have been 1956 I was there in 63. The only instructor Who's name I remember was Mr Agate he would come around in the morning with a fairy liquid bottle of cold water and you you weren't up you got squirted.

Hi Rob. My Dad was a Vindi boy in aprox 19/47. His name was Ronald Smith.( Ronnie Smith.) as he was known. I would love to find out any information on him. & The name of the ship he come to Australia on. As he jumped ship. And made a life here in Oz. Dad passed away in 20003. & he never spoke of any of this. But all my rallies live in England. & we have been trying to put all the bits together. But sadley a lot of the puzzle is missing. I was reading these posts with intrest. & I hope you or someone here could shed some light on this. I would be most greatfull. Kind Regards. Ronnies Daughter Margie.

Could you give us his DOB and place can then see if we can locate his Seamans Papers which would be a start.
Just as a guess here was his name Herbert Ronald ???

The Vindi, a place of wonderment a place where even those in any of HM Prisons got food, a place where on a Saturday morning hut inspection.
The wooden floor had to shine or the whole hut was in trouble.

Get two guys to sit on a blanket and a couple pull it up and down.
Got a splinter from it then go and see Codine Annie.

A place where in the winter ice would form on the inside of windows so at it melted you got a face wash, a place where many of us thought at timesthe officers were escapees from some horror movie.


But we went in as young very naïve lads and came out ready to take the world on.
Some of the young of today could be well improved by six weeks in a similar place.

Shades of my RAF days at Basic Training (Bridgnorth ) John with similar conditions as to food huts etc! Good days though ,also my training at SASSAR in South Africa for the Stewards Course where we were locked in for the duration of our Training 6 Months but also enjoyed all of it!
