Bill,
The maritime archives & library mentioned by Rob Page are at the well known Albert dock Maritime Museum complex. An appointment is required to view any documents.
All details that you know i.e. Gwilym Jones, DOB 1915, Holyhead, Alfred Holt & Co. (The Blue Funnel Line), landed for burial at Marseille approx. 1950 etc. should be given in advance so that the curators can try and find something for you. You will have seen the exact format probably on the "Who do you think you are?" programmes on TV. One of the local maritime historians will advise you if anything has been found. The Maritime Museum is a good day out in any case, so there will be some benefit, even if they can't find any information for you.
You should also know whether he was a passenger/deck officer/Engineer/ radio officer/ordinary seaman or whatever from your family background knowledge. This would help a lot.
I shared Rob Page's concern about a White Funnel ship arriving in Marseille. Unfortunately, one of the downsides of putting anything in print is that another reader initially tends to assume the content to be correct.
All the best,
Gareth Davies
my concern was how did they carry enough bunkers to get through the Bay , so the change from White to Blue was a relief
