Misinformation
On the news last night (cannot remember if it was BBC or Sky), there was a piece about how much the shipping industry contribute to air pollution world wide, it showed a huge maersk container ship leaving Felixstowe and also a P and O ferry, both with plumes of exhaust coming from their funnels. It then went on to show delegates at the IMO in London supposedly discussing means of how to reduce air pollution from ships. What the news piece failed to say was that there is already an IMO convention coming into force within the next few years that requires all sea going vessels to burn low sulphur (less than 5%)fuel at all times unless they are fitted with an exhaust gas scrubber system.
Just another example of how lazy journalists fail to report the complete story.

Re: Misinformation
Jim she would have to be doing in excess of 30 knots to get to Suez or Port Said.
That is of course if this app is accurate, not sure if it is taking into account of clocks.
Sea route & distance - ports.com
If it is accurate a handy little tool just type in the departure port and arrival port enter your speed and hit calculate.
Would not surprise me these days if an app like that was not already incorporated into the electronic charts they use at sea on most modern tonnage these days.

Re: Misinformation
Jim B
Bit suspicious of that 5 day to Suez claim as , if I am correct, they would include a call at Algeciras and also service speed of those monsters is more likely to be between 20-25 knots.

Re: Misinformation

Re: Misinformation
Well Rob you could send it al over here.
Just down the road from us, a mere 50klms there is one of the biggest oil recyclers around.
The oil is converted to diesel for use in the heavy industry trucks.
But the old cooking oil fetches a very good price, bought up to manufacture soap.
So if any one tells you that you smell a bit fishy you will know why.
When I was at the Uni we had a 40 gallon oil drum to put the old oil in and we were paid $50 per barrel.
