Default Air Pollution Caused By Shipping.

Toxic emissions around major ports in the UK are far higher than previously suggested, accordind to a report for the Government-and experts think Liverpool is particularly badly affected.Levels of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide, which are both harmful pollutents are three or four times higher than previously thought and say they are "a significant cause of concern for the health of the local population.
This is an interesting article,How 16 ships create as much pollution as all the cars in the world.

Thats an interesting article, The new IOW ferry has just been launched in Turkey!!!, this week, now she will have a hybrid diesel electric engine, which is supposed to be much less polluting than the existing ones. I am not an engineer by any means, so not sure even how that works, i know what hybrid means, but like a car will she run on electric most of the time ?. perhaps one of our engineers will know, kt

Just read the article Jim, it is a bit behind the times now as most ships are now running on low sulphur fuels? or are supposed to be.
The yanks are talking about introducing a system that when a ship berths it then moves onto shore power, I think they called it the flat Iron system. I have never heard if it has been in part implemented. Certainly will have been a
I was on the Gulf to Loop(USA) run on ULCC's , SS Volans big mother of a ship.
Anyway we would load and head for the States via the Cape as we were to deep fully loaded for the sewage canal. All down the East coast of Africa and round the Cape across the Atlantic all as you could see and taste was sulphur. You hardly needed to take a sight or check your position as all you had to do was follow smoke haze, it was disgusting. On a clear day if you stand on the Cliffs of Dover and look over the channel you see the yellow stain on the horizion.
Bring back the days of sail. Let's face it if a cargo is not in a rush stick it on a sailing ship.
I read an article here last year that a company was going operate a sailing vessel running from Bordeaux to Dublin carrying wine in Barrels for 8 months a year. They were going to offer places for people to sign on as crew along the lines of the Ocean Youth club? I don't know if it ever got off the ground so to speak but would be a great adventure for some young folk.

Los Angeles has an onshore electrical system. When the ship docks, it shuts down its generators and a massive big plug is inserted in a socket.
Don't see how cuts down pollution as fossil fuel is used in the power station.

Well if all the so called polluting ships stopped sailing, they wouldn't have to worry about comparisons as the cars, if they had any, probably wouldn't be running either, and lets face it 90% of the population have no idea what a ship or its purpose is anyway, but they'd soon find out if they stopped them running, just a thought, and as someone has already stated the report probably out of date, but it is a slow news day so any story is better than none

#3 Vic , as you say a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul. From an engineering point of view you may get away with it on a motor ship but on a steamer ( yes there are still a lot about LNG Carriers) not to many would be keen on bottling the boilers, and I bet the pollution on re flashing the boilers again might not be that appealing either, also letting the turbine cool down ???. The length of time ships spend in port is it worth it, but I suppose a busy port like LA??
I suppose that is one advantage of Box boats getting bigger and bigger you are reducing the number of vessels at sea so there by reducing emissions.

Upto date report in local paper today.Dr.Tristan Smith,a shipping researcher at University College London told the Independent website "Ships burn the lowest grade waste product that you can get from a refinery called heavy fuel oil."

Diesel cars have been branded dirty and causing pollution in UK cities. The sales of UK diesel driven cars has fallen by about 25%, while at the same time CO2 has risen by 1%
So much for our so called experts.

Alas Lewis it will probably remain a pipe dream with the billions of tonnes of cargo moving around the world these days, although sails can be trimmed mechanically and by computer, would still need to be manned by a strong physical crew, where would we get them, and then would need some sort of mechanical propulsion for docking/undocking so the pollution factor still there, the days of wooden ships and iron men are long gone, even steel ships and iron men are a lost cause, the next development on the horizon is the crewless vessel, but they still need mechanical propulsion, unless there is something on the horizon we don't know about, the thought of the alternative power option, nuclear power on crewless ships guided by computer and all the clever hackers out there doesn't bear thinking about
