Drinking Establishments
When I joined B&C in the late sixties, the first jobs I was given was standing by the Mailships in Soton, before being appointed to the S.A. Vaal.
The company put us up in digs in Soton, can't remember the exact place. The digs were located on a large crescent, which was entered from the main road.
There was quite a few new B&C personnel waiting to join the various ships.
The digs were run by the most miserable pair of people that I have had the misfortune to meet.
As we (B&C employees) got to know each other we decided to visit the local pub, which was on the main road opposite the entrance to the crescent.
There were, I think, six of us entered this pub, it was like something out of a wild west pub, in the middle of the floor was a pot bellied stove, with the flue going off at an angle before exiting the roof.
We lined up at the bar ordered the round of drinks, the locals ceased all conversation and sat staring a us. We decided to leave, the barmaid said ignore them, they don't like strangers.
Walking down the street we found a small comfortable bar, where we were made most welcome, at closing time the owner, said we are dimming the lights and closing the curtains and we were set for after hours drinking. We left in the early ours of the following morning.
As Sunday was a day off, we decided to visit the pub, we were greeted with the word "didn't expect to see you lads", we asked if (not that we had) done anything wrong, No, my lot only drink half pints you lot sunk quite a lot.
For the remainder of the stay that became our local, can't remember the name of the pub. Good early training.
The guy that run it was ex military.

Re: Drinking Establishments
I think the latter Pub was one and the same that I used to Visit as well Vic,lovely People who ran it and always open after hours, with Doors locked and Curtains drawn so the Coppers would not look in!
It was as I recall left turn as you went away from Soton from the Bargate end ,and yes was in a sort of end Street!
For now the name also eludes me ,in fact I have in the past been trying to think of it,as I used to go out with one of the fair Barmaids there,a lovely Girl .
May think of its name one day! Grrrrr!

Re: Drinking Establishments
Vernon, there was a time when almost 50 pubs were close to the' Bargate', now there are but two as far as I could see when last there in 2017.
Of course all the best, 'Horse and Groom' etc are long gone, so sad.
Juniper Berry still there but that is about the only one we used still inexistence.

Re: Drinking Establishments
I once stayed at the Mission in Southampton just for one night and took a good long drink in a number of well know watering holes.
But it was to be a very bad night in the end.
When I got back to the mission I realized that the sheets on my bed had been starched.
How that was accomplished I will never know but they were as stiff as a board had to rip them off and sleep under just a blanket.

Re: Drinking Establishments
Remember that well John
They always did that and the Sheets felt very stiff and cold, but after a few minutes seemed to settle in.
That was the only thing as in the Winter it could be very chilly,
Other than that I always thought that Jellico Hostel was a good one with the Staff very friendly, and good Food too.
Nice Snooker Room they had there as well.
Cheers
And that good old Pub the JB https://www.bing.com/search?q=Junipe...dc8c8200b01739

That sounds like the "Digs" Rob, remember the slot TV. Mr & Mrs Digs, were miserable so and so's, pub cannot remember the name.
The one where we were allowed to drink after hours, was painted white, if my memory serves me correctly.

Just going back to my Post #2 I have since received two Photos of Pubs I used to visit and the one shown will name it was the one I have been thinking of for many Years now! They were both n the same place nearly opposite each other! The young Lady I mentioned ,wonder whatever happened to her!
Oh well. This is the one I refer to was The Running Horse later changed to Wig and Pen
The other opposite was The Spa Tavern
