In the life time of most people they will see maybe one or two very good leaders who are also statesmen.

Maggie fitted the role but apart from Churchill during the war cannot think of any others.

Here in Oz we had J. Howard before him a number but way back and since he left NONE, and worse still none on the horizon,.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I spent ten months on the Middlesex one trip and everybody from the Old Man ( Willie Dan) down to the Galley Boy ( Mick the Brum) was drunk the whole damn time. That really wasn't an unusual ship at that time ( about 1970 )

yep Terry, Once the container ships took hold, those long turnarounds became a thing of the past and if you could see wome of the pubs that used to be seamen's watering holes, your hair would turn white *smile*

    Hi Ivan,

    Dad had a troubled life.
I wish things had turned out different for him.
We never gave up on him. But 99% of the time we seen him he was drunk..

    Thank you
    Bob

    Know the feeling mate.

Train from Southampton to London with a bar on board, well some one had to pay the barman's wage.
Get home slightly under the weather and all my sister can say, no not welcome home, but rather, you are drunk.

    Sweet sister mine, not.

Sometimes Bob life throws things at us that we cannot handle and once what we once called the 'demon drink' knocks at your door and refuses to leave it is a difficult house to exit. I do hope you have some happy memories of him and we have been able to explain why sometimes these things happen. Anyway from your posts you seem to have weathered the storm well and we wish you well for the future.

    Kind regards

    Ivan

The thread began with the question,' did men drink at sea?

For some I knew that would be like asking is the Pope a Catholic?

Rob, They say there's a silver lining in everything, Your Dad wasn't alone as far as seaman drinking he wasn't the first and he wont be the last. But living the experience makes you a stronger person in your life i had a similar experience as a young lad, Me and my Brother would be sent out on many occasion to find my old man and bring him home, But there was still a lot of love and respect there and i believe it made me a stronger person as i never wanted the same for my kids. Regards Rob Terry.
