Hello John,
I was never fortunate enough to sail in Blue Funnel but the Odyssey Works and the Bosun Instructor O'Brian were well known to many of us outside the that company. There is an excellent You Tube presentation by the name 'Sea School 1964' which gives a good idea of what went on there and the Bosun O'Brian is featured. I heard or read somewhere you were all referred to as OBs commandoes. All things considered, you can see from the You Tube presentation why BF had a safety record second to none.

Re: Safety at Sea
I did One trip with Blu Flu, on a SAM boat, Euryades, ex Glenshiel, Seven month trip and a good job in the Spice Islands, pure paradise,
Then joined the Melampus for her Maiden Voyage, Didn't like the set up, like the Royal Navy, they had Leading Seamen, what were they?? never seen before or since. Another AB telling me with more experience, what to do,
Fortunately the 1960 Seamens Strike started just before we sailed, so walked off. Mr Greenwood said don't come back, Good, never did.
Brian.

Never going to happen Jim, just a word or a phrase throws people off on a tangent, go with the flow, its not a classroom, just enjoy, well try to anyway, perhaps you could regale us with some safety stories, we may even get back on course
