You cannot generalize. Alfred Holt had a great reputation for looking after his personnel.

###lewis states in an earlier post .....CAPPY TALKS RUBBISH .......on the union thing well let me tell you lewis ......i had up to 30 people working for me me .......i paid what the job was worth ......i paid above the union rate .....but i would not have some half baked motor mouth gobbing off in parrot fashion to me .....i was the one with my house and all my asssets on the line not the motor mouth ......i paid above the union rate and my competitors were not happy as the best workers came to me ......when anyone retired i was awash with people for there job ......i had 3 generations of one family working for me ......i do not disagree about big companies wishing to have a union to talk to .....but i was talking about my businnes and what my life has been ....i need no one to talk for me lewis .....as for the word rubbish i think that is very suitable to your shoot from the hip gobbing off .......one answer doesnt suit all lewis unless you need someone to back you up........never been a sheep ......have worked hours and took businnes gambles that would have frightened some to death ....but lewis i did it the way i wanted ......and without the ilk used in many cases of unions that have closed thousands of businnesses and NEVER GIVEN A JOB TO ANYONE except there own ........sit back sometimes lewis and think we all needed a foghorn at sea from time to time ....but not all the time ....regards cappy free from any yoke PS i took many young folk from the rathbone society .....a society looking after children in big family difficulty.... ......no bloody union was looking after them so row your own boat lewis not every one needs an army behind them........cappy
Cappy what was it you said about government or council grants a while back. Get the grant build the wall and then knock the wall down and get another grant to build a wall???? sorry that is me shooting from the hip. You paid what the job was worth? When was the last time the Union called a strike at the Nissan Plant , Vauxhalls etc!! not for years and years why , because any perceived grievance was sorted out before things got out of hand. Sorry but with all due respect alot of us have been out of the work place that long some have lost touch with the real industrial world. There are those who constantly post about the youth of today are a waste of space , they want to sit behind a computer and do not want to get there hands dirty , loads of kids want to become motor mechanics , electricians, plumbers and if you don't think that is true !!!!!!!!!! the sad fact is that employers do not want to bear the cost of training apprentices. One good thing that may come out of Brexit is that if and when immigration is brought under control and a shortage of skilled labour is a result wellthen employers will have to start training apprentices or else go to the wall.
lewis i firmly believe that most people are fair minded ......but for what reason would anyone employ a youth as an apprentice unless there was a job for him .....its all very nice to say ......oh we need more apprentices ...but any businnes man must look at cost .....remember lewis you looked at the shipowners costs ....not your own.......as for the old tale apprentices are cheap labour .....that is one of the most overplayed statements ever made.....if they can do the job as an apprentice ...what is the time served man getting paid for.........i only say this lewis ...why dont you set an apprentice on ..the answer you have no need of him ......that is why we have no apprenticeships l......its not rocket science ....if no one creates and puts capital into a bussines ... no one would have a job ......the problem is today it is extremely expensive to set up any businnes the costs are penal ......my answer is if you think its easy use your own money .....and have the balls to gamble all ......i would guess lewis you have never had the HONOUR of employing some one and paying there wages out of your pocket ...not the companies pocket yours lewis believe me that is a different kettle of fish ......show me a union which has assets of millions even billions that ever created a job or an apprenticeship and i might listen to you ...cappy
That's what I say about politicians Cappy before seeking the people's vote they should make their CV available. To the general public would not today have a bunch of illegals now sitting in the Australian parliament. As regards apprentices, apprentice what? Maybe apprentice politician and would be the shortest apprenticeship in the world, anyone voting for an ex union treasurer or secretary must be living in cloud cuckoo land. Unions should have no place. In politics. They are a union trades of workers and nothing else.. when you get. To the stage where the unions run businesses that is both immoral and wrong. I believe in unions but not the way they are being mis used. When a Union is run by gangsters and. Strong arm bullies and see those same bullies sitting smug in the Parliament makes my blood boil, and think most people being unionists or not feel the same. The unions of today are a business in themselves and if don't represent the majority of workers then they must be representing them selfs. There are many white collar unions as well and not all what we once called workers which is getting to be extinct in any case. Politics themselfs the same as the unions want a complete overhaul. This is more and more being shown worldwide as people wise up to those who have lived off the fat of the land and off others labours. Without wishing to put myself in a position for slander, I have it on good authority that a high up member of the labor party who could well be the next PM. Her husband was arrested for drugs in a big way and received 10 years gaol, if had been caught abroad would probably have received the death penalty. His gaol term was much reduced and was released and received a high paying job in government circles and Is still there on film star wages to most of us. Then people talk about the honesty of political parties. Doesn't exist. JWS
Cappy the very fact that you have replied means you are listening to me. Why is there a world shortage of qualified seafarers?no one is training any or few and far between. Very admirable on your part to have employed up to 30 people and given them a livelihood. Off course we all know you did that out of the goodness of your heart, nothing about making a profit so you as you regularily remind us are very comfortablely well off. Again nothing wrong with that as I am sure you worked hard to make your business a succeess.
Concerning apprentices the reason you train them up is that Joe the old welder is 62 and will be retiring in 3 years time so unless I advertise for a fully trained welder( of which there will ne none as no one is training anybody) I will have no one to replace old joe, unless that is I get old Joe to train up his replacement. What part of that concept do you not grasp, as you have said in other posts Government grants!!! either that or stop complaining about emmigrants taking British jobs.
i know nothing lewis of the the need for seafarers world wide ....i unlike yourself dont know everything ....i started my own businnes because the outfit i worked for was not the best employer .....i knew i could do better than them and be my own boss without paying into a union that told me what i was worth .....and to be honest the local man was just about capable of tying his shoe laces if you could get him out the pub.....of course i wanted to make some money to look after my family .the best i could .....i would suspect anyone going to sea now must be a glutton for punishment ....it certainly would not suit myself ie ...no comradeship as we new it ...no time in port ....and a future of ships driving themselves .....i have no shame in starting a businnes...you refer to joe the welder at 62 ready to retire .....but if you have no work for him and you must pay a wage for no return what is the sense of having another outgoing on the books ie the apprentice ......lewis i went down an engineroom very little at sea ..i would listen to what youn have to say on engine rooms although i find your some what bellicose manner sometime off putting ......as for running a businnes for your self not some one elses enterprise i suggest you leave that to them who have got the teashirt .......my last on this is .......what the feck is the sense of having apprentices if there are no jobs for them .....apprentice foy boatmen required... nothing to do all day ...reason no ships ......cappy
That's what you call self advancement Cappy and some of us wish we'd had the courage to do the same. I dragged the bottom of the barrel for work at sea , the. One good thing was that I saw it out to 65 . I had the good fortune to find much better employment in Australia and finished up much better than what would have. However those better conditions were achieved by means of a Union. I would be two faced to receive what they got for their members and then decry them. I may not have agreed with some of their policy's but there is always a price to pay, and family does come first as you say. I looked on it as getting back on what I had been gypped out of for so many years. Cheers JWS
Getting back to the original subject. A and P in Hebburn are looking at getting some of the work. They built a big section of the first new aircraft carrier, delivered it ahead of time and on budget but the contracts to build further blocks was taken away from them in order for BAE to be kept going. A and P in Hebburn are pretty successful as a repair yard, at least one of their dry docks is always full. They also have the largest dry dock on the Tyne (The old Hawthorn Leslie dock), Unfortunately the huge plate and assembly shed that was built in the 70's was sold off so it is no longer part of their complex.

I am sure the contract will end up going to BAE systems as they have a lot of MP's in there pockets.
