Re: Bullying
I'm surprised at so many cases of bullying aboard. I did five years in the M.N. six ships, and never had bullying done to me. Had one fight with a deck boy when I was a catering boy. The bosun grabbed us both by the scruff of our necks, banged our heads together and told us to get back to work and if he saw us at it again we would be on charge. We never spoke to each other again, the bosun scared me more. But that's not bullying, that's straitening two kids out.

Re: Bullying
Only struck one bully in my time at sea. Struck being the operative word.
A winger in the tourist gallop continuously attempted to use one of the bell boys as his personal slave.
Told him all manner of untruths to get what he wanted.
One day I spoke to him and said stop, he told me where to go.
I then told him to go to the medical center as i hit him on the chin, very hard.
Asked the head waiter for a different waiting station the next day.

Re: Bullying
Hi Rod.
That was the only time I came across bullying in 16 years at sea, I was a deck boy , but got I got acclimatized no one would have got away with it again.

Re: Bullying
Hi Rodney, it's interesting to hear about your experiences in the maritime industry, and I appreciate you sharing your perspective. While bullying can unfortunately occur in various environments, it's great to hear that you didn't face such issues during your time at sea. It sounds like the incident you mentioned was more about maintaining discipline rather than actual bullying.

Re: Bullying
Rod.
There are many things on my computer I know nothing about, when my son comes to put on my Telstra payment he checks everything, it would take me two years to go over it all. Like you this site and my emails are the only thing I bother with.

Re: Bullying
After complaints from staff in my department (mainly female) that they were being bullied by a colleague, and being aware that he was a master of provocation but unable to do anything about it until a complaint was raised, I had him 'up' with a colleague and his union rep. His rep. said he was aware as to why I had called for him and that he should just listen to what I had to say. He didn't. He tried every means of provocation towards us, possibly in the hope that we might react and wanting to know who it was that made the complaint etc. I explained that his level of agression was unatural and that I suspected he was 'on' something. If I were to get any further indication of agression toward his colleagues that I would have him tested for drug missuse. He was tested and proved positive. Instant dismissal. Kudos gained by my staff who were very happy to see him go.
