Experienced? or just stupid, collision on the Humber
These two master got what they deserved as far as I am concerned. The only thing I dispute is the need to make a "proper" passage plan for a voyage from Grimsby to Hull, though having said that I have had vetting inspectors remark on the lack of a passage plan for the voyage, under pilotage, from Eastham locks up to Carrington.

Here is the report on the above collision on the River Humber plus a picture of the "City of Rotterdam", an unusual looking wheelhouse.
The term "Relative Motion Illusion" is a new one on me.

1. Looks like they had some bits left over from a 747 Jumbo
2. Probably something like when you're sitting on a train in the station and the train on the next platform starts to pull out, you actually momentarily think that is your own train that is moving, but how that would relate to two vessels crossing defeats me, however that bridge design certainly prevents any watch keeper being at one with the weather and listening to the river and the sound of another vessels engine or propeller, mind you you do get a close-up of any collision!

Ah! well John, my remarks are still relevant (maybe) first time I've seen a 'Pilot on Board' flown so far from the bridge, but then again they don't have a triatic stay

Re: Experienced? or just stupid, collision on the Humber
Just read a brief report on the collision and the aspect of 'Relative Motion Illusion' all to do with the axis of the bridge windows in the futuristic design of the bridge front, neither the bridge designers or consulting naval architects had taken into account the optical illusions that these severe slanting windows would produce when installed, I guess we'd have to experience it to fully understand it, as apparently you'd have to live with it something to get used to it and of course the pilot would not have that advantage. Masters on both ships were censured for not taking over from the pilot earlier than they did when they saw a situation developing. The naval architects were basically told go back to the drawing board when designing similar bridges and take the Relative Motion Illusion into account. The owners say they have taken remedial action with the bridge windows but do not say what it was.

Re: Experienced? or just stupid, collision on the Humber
I got mixed up a bit. #1 referred to a collision between a wooden motor yacht and a DFDS ferry. The City of Rotterdam was another incident.
The MAIB report on the yacht collision shows that the yacht skipper was using a navigation app on his IPAD to navigate in dense fog. He had the yachts mast lowered so he was unable to use its radar.
