SS Pegu
I have just been watching a program on channel 4, mainly about the coastal area of the Mersey. There is a wreck right at the entrance of the Mersey, the SS Pegu which was entering in the dark in Nov 1939, a lot of the Scouse guys will probably know the story, she was carrying general cargo to Burma, including whisky, Liverpools whisky galore, ?, seems the locals managed to aquire some of it, and several got nicked, so how many did not get caught one wonders, but good luck to them, what else would you do ? Leave it in the sea ?. Also shows the effort made to stop the coastal errosion the bomb damaged buildings in Liverpool was scooped up and deposited on the sand dunes. All in all an interesting program, don't know if you can get it on catchup, kt

Re: SS Pegu...Britain at Low Tide.
Very interesting. I was fascinated by the story about the few miles of building rubble now emerging on the foreshore north of Liverpool. As Liverpool was heavily blitzed in 1940,the thousands of tons of rubble was, after the war gradually removed to a coastal landfill site ,near the Waterloo area of the cityI believe?Over the last 70 years coastal erosion has caused it to gradually resurface .A Liverpool University archaeologist identified one 6 foot intact piece as being from the blitzed iconic Liverpool Custom House.
It will be on Channel 4 Freeview /Catchup,along with a previous episode which featured Northumberland coastal settlements and wrecks.Another episide is due next Sunday.

Re: SS Pegu
The Masts of the Pegu were a regular sight when sailing from and arriving in Liverpool in the 50s and 60s., probably long gone now, I think she was one of Paddy Hendersons.

Yes Brian she was Paddy Hendersons ,wrecked 1939 just after war broke out,and all the buoyed channel lights were extinguished. All 103 persons were rescued.
Still there, and the reason for the documentary was for the university team to record what's left of her before she disappears. She was no longer accessible by foot due to shifting sandbanks,so they went by boat.

Re: SS Pegu
Yes Davey they buried a city on the beach. When I was a kid there were very big houses down there falling down it was known as the erosion. The British Nicotine Co.that dumped thousands of tons of waste (was it nicotine) down there was situated near to the Alexander dock. The Customs House,I'm sure the bombed out building was still there until the late 50's I'm sure Brian can confirm this.Next weeks episode should be good is that a WW1 warship wreck they are going to show.I just tried to get it on You Tube can get the trailer but not the full programme, advice that programme was to large or something for You Tube.I wonder where they put the bombed out rubble from London and other heavily bombed cities.

Re: SS Pegu
A lot of the bricks and mortar were re-used. My father when he was de-mobbed used to get me to go around to a bombed Church around the corner for the bricks and used to knock off all the mortar as far as possible and he used to use to rebuild peoples garden walls. Peoples expectations were not like those of today and used to help each other. Today is dog eat dog in their quest to better themselves, there has to be a limit somewhere to stop and think. JS

Re: SS Pegu
In the early 50s, from Dale Street all the way down to the Old Sailors Home, Canning Place and the old Customs Houe, . South John Street etc was all bomb sites, The whole City centre was a bomb site, First walked around it in 1947. It was just like this then but the roads had been cleared.
Brian
Here are some photos of the Bombing,, Queen Victoria`s Statue virtually untouched on Derby Square. So all that had to be demolished and disposed of so made an excellent sea defence.
Another reason to hate the germans.

Re: SS Pegu
We all complain from time to time over whats on TV, but that is the sort of program that i love, history of an area. i think when we find out next week why the Pegu was in the Mersey, the story may have been padded out somewhat. The ancient footprints solidified on the beach there was also interesting, with the trees from thousands of years ago. Bring on more of these programs, much better than i,m a celebrity get me out of here and the likes , kt
