On bosrd the 'Paparoa' in the middle of the Indian ocean and a movie would be put on. All crew not working up on deck to watch. The screen was an old one and the movie could be seen from either side. Deckies on one side, engineers and catreing on the other.
The nomeward bound we had to sit and watch about 15 minutes of the Beatles and their arrival at Essendon airport and journey to the city centre. The skipper Cpt. North was a mad movie film maker and he told us he had filmed this for his daughter back home.
A more recent occurrence was in the early eighties on a Sea Containers ship bound from Bermuda to the States when the Filiplno Chief Mate stabbed the British master, killing him and throwing his body overboard. The mate was overpowered by the rest of the crew and handed over to the police in the States. I never did find out what happened after that.
While in Miami in 1983 the cook from Pancaribe chased an AB from Panatlantic along the Quay with carving knives. Fortunately or unfortunately for the AB, he ran straight into the arms of a female Miami police woman who arrested him. He was later deported don't remember what happened to the cook.

When I joined the Pacific Reliance in 19564 I was the proud owner of an Alba short wave radio. So we had BBC almost every where in the world. The Goon Show was funny enough but throw in the shortwave atmospherics and it was hilarious. For music we listened to the Voice of America Jazz hour, or pop hour, so we were never short of music or news.
#65... Did you listen to the Merchant Navy Program Colin. Don't know if and when they stopped. Probably when there were no ships left. Or maybe carried on in a different language. The short time I was with Philipino crews compared to others, they seemed very volatile to me, were always prone to carry weapons of some description. Cheers JS
