Went to the sleep clinic to get a new mask Cappy and have to go back next Friday to see the quack. 300 dollars for the mask and 10 dollars to park the car for 2 hours in the Hospital. These hospital carparks are a total rip off. If you haven't got a car how are you going to get there. Anyhow they wouldn't give me one like the Lone Ranger. When they asked the last time I was there and I said 8 years there was much consternation as are supposed to report in every so often and I jumped ship, so will probably get logged flogged and keel hauled when see the Dr. on Friday. That is if he will see me. If I now get a long black cape and cowl can stand in for that character in star wars. Cheers John S... Darth Vader mark 2. That's me. JS

Things haven't changed much since the last WW. Trouble in Europe and the gas masks still look similar. This face mask for sleep Abpnia might proof useful with a sneaky attack by pollution from across the North Sea, everyone should get one, they are coming back into fashion, better than a safety pin through the nose. Cheers JS

We call the latest fad, "flavor of the month", be it: popular dress, jeans slung low to show the crack of your bum, weird diets, eat no carbohydrates, or eat no meat, or vegetables only. Each diet has had a good run for its money and then a new one comes along.

A popular real or pseudo medical issues not to long ago, was hyperthyroidism. This is a real medical problem, I have had this complaint for fifty-eight years. Quite simply the doctor prescribes oral thyroid medication, a few blood tests to get the correct balance and take the pill every day, and one is normal. A periodic blood test as part of an annual medical and if needed the medication is adjusted.

It was found out and published (mainly in the woman's weekly/monthly magazine) that hyperthyroidism causes one to put on weight...well every fat persons excuse was that they had a thyroid condition. Yes, untreated, you will gain weight. Without medication I'm hyperthyroid, with it I'm normal. I weigh 152lbs (70klg) and I'm 5ft.10 1/2ins. How come I'm not fat? Because of medication and sensible eating, so that rules out the myth of hyperthyroidism as an excuse for being fat.

Now sleep apnea, in the States is the flavor of the month and the talk of the cocktail circuit (no pubs here). First John S. I'm not suggesting you do not suffer from sleep apnea or the wearing of a mask is not needed in your case, or that it will not cure your problem, good luck with it, I hope it works and pleasant dreams.

Here in the States I know of two relatives that have gone through the sleep clinic and both came out with the mask and equipment. My brother-in-law and his wife. I know of six others, neighbors and friends who too have gone that route and only one was told she did not have a breathing problem. The rest were diagnosed with sleep apnea. That's seven out of eight got prescribed the "Darth Vader" gear, which is very expensive here. Now here is the kicker. All the Darth Vaderites are way overweight, and five of the seven "WERE" hyperthyroid and somehow were cured. Yes, right!

My brother-in-law and sister-in-law are both well overweight and must look a sight both wearing scuba gear in bed.

I am a rotten sleeper, at least four trips to the bog each night. My wife keeps on that I should go to the sleep clinic. my first question was "Will it also cure my spastic bladder?"

    "Well no." she answers.

"Then I'm not getting in and out of bed in diving gear at least four times a night."

Rodney, there is gold in them therrr masks https://au.finance.yahoo.com/q/pr?s=RMD.AX . We must be doing the right thing. I am the same height and am 74kg in my socks. However, a bloke's got to be careful walking the dog or going out in a strong breeze.

Rodney normally I would have said the same. I would have put it down to the long and unsociable and variable hours in the latter part of my time at sea, which was further accentuated by the occurrences of July 6th. 1988. Which even to this day wake up at short notice sweating. However as one gets older and doctors seem to think as one gets older any change from what they think normal is questioned, I was and still am at times tend to feel tired all the time which I would say is just getting old. On the results of those tests at sleep clinic being wired up they said I stopped breathing 53 times. One comes through each stoppage oneself and is like struggling to the surface through water, and obviously puts a strain on other organs. We all have to die with something and I still plump for kidney failure as that got a hammering at times. Although I have had the usual bodily failure of functions that most of us get don't think I am any different than during my seatime, and is just old age. If they were that short handed that they wanted crews back at sea would am sure get passed by the shipping doctor it being the usual law of supply and demand. I respect the diagnosis of any type of doctor as he knows more about it than me. But also recognize that they are human and not infallible, their knowledge comes mostly through others experiences and the past. When ones time is up its up that's all there is to it as far as I am concerned, however would hate to think I had fallen asleep through any good parts still left. Cheers JS PS Cappy would call that falling asleep on the job. JS

Rodders, my wife had the thyroid problem but they cut it out, very nice American surgeon, so now on a daily pill for ever. But getting the correct balance is a bit of a problem, blood tests every six weeks to keep it stable.
As for the masks, good friend had to have one so not to be outdone his wife, ex nurse, went for the sleep clinic treatment and yes she got one as well.
If you are getting up that many times then I suggest you give up going to bed or maybe see if you have a Prostate problem!
    Happy daze John in Oz.

#8 John, I had nasal polyps removed - sitting in a dentist chair in Singapore - over 30 years ago - and they grew again so I had them out again here some 15 years ago - in Springwood Hospital - I was on a CPAP machine for a couple of years and that blew the little beggars aside and it worked well.
